Data Modeling Made Simple with ER/Studio Data Architect, by Steve Hoberman

Data Modeling Made Simple with ER/Studio Data Architect (DA) will provide the business or IT professional with a practical working knowledge of data modeling concepts and best practices, along with how to apply these principles with ER/Studio DA. You'll build many ER/Studio DA data models along the way, applying best practices to master these ten objectives:

  • You will know why a data model is needed and which ER/Studio DA models are the most appropriate for each situation
  • You will be able to read a data model of any size and complexity with the same confidence as reading a book
  • You will know how to apply all the key features of ER/Studio DA
  • You will be able to build relational and dimensional conceptual, logical, and physical data models in ER/Studio DA
  • You will be able to apply techniques such as indexing, transforms, and forward engineering to turn a logical data model into an efficient physical design
  • You will improve data model quality and impact analysis results by leveraging ER/Studio DA's lineage functionality and compare/merge utility
  • You will achieve enterprise architecture through ER/Studio DA's repository and portal functionality
  • You will be able to apply ER/Studio DA's data dictionary features
  • You will learn ways of sharing the data model through reporting and through exporting the model in a variety of formats
  • You will leverage ER/Studio DA's naming functionality to improve naming consistency
  • This book contains four sections:
Section I introduces data modeling and the ER/Studio DA landscape. Learn why data modeling is so critical to software development and even more importantly, why data modeling is so critical to understanding the business. You will also learn about the ER/Studio DA environment. By the end of this section, you will have created and saved your first data model in ER/Studio DA and be ready to start modeling in Section II!

Section II explains all of the symbols and text on a data model, including entities, attributes, relationships, domains, and keys. By the time you finish this section, you will be able to 'read' a data model of any size or complexity, and create a complete data model in ER/Studio DA.

Section III explores the three different levels of models: conceptual, logical, and physical. A conceptual data model (CDM) represents a business need within a defined scope. The logical data model (LDM) represents a detailed business solution, capturing the business requirements without complicating the model with implementation concerns such as software and hardware. The physical data model (PDM) represents a detailed technical solution. The PDM is the logical data model compromised often to improve performance or usability. The PDM makes up for deficiencies in our technology. By the end of this section you will be able to create conceptual, logical, and physical data models in ER/Studio DA.

Section IV discusses additional features of ER/Studio DA. These features include data dictionary, data lineage, automating tasks, repository and portal, exporting and reporting, naming standards, and compare and merge functionality.

    About the Author
Steve Hoberman is the most requested data modeling instructor in the world. Introduced at over 50 international conferences as everything from a "data modeling guru" to "data modeling rock star", Steve balances the formality and precision of data modeling with the realities of building software systems with severe time, budget, and people constraints. In his consulting and teaching, he focuses on templates, tools, and guidelines to reap the benefits of data modeling with minimal investment. He taught his first data modeling class in 1992 and has educated more than 10,000 people about data modeling and business intelligence techniques since then, spanning every continent except Africa and Antarctica. Steve is known for his entertaining, interactive teaching and lecture style (watch out for flying candy!), and organizations around the globe have brought Steve in to teach his Data Modeling Master Class, which is recognized as the most comprehensive data modeling course in the industry. Steve is the author of six books on data modeling, including the bestseller Data Modeling Made Simple. He is the founder of the Design Challenges group, inventor of the Data Model Scorecard®, Conference Chair of the Data Modeling Zone conference, and the recipient of the 2012 Data Administration Management Association (DAMA) International Professional Achievement Award.

This book will get you started with ER/Studio Data Architect, even if you have no prior experience!

This book goes beyond the introductory tutorial that comes with the product and provides some step-by-step guides to learning the base capabilities of this program. One big plus for me is the explanation and demonstration of the Merge utility where you can update an existing data model from a newer version, or merge two models together by selecting what you wish to share. I only wish there had been a full explanation of all the options of the Merge Utility Wizard. For me, the countless hours saved by not having to fumble around with trial and error more than made up for the price of the book. It is definitely NOT the help file with a few illustrations as has been alluded to previously. Highly recommended.

    Re-print of help file.

Recently purchased this book and disappointed but, not surprised.
The author has series of similar books (Erwin, PowerDesigner) and all of them are nicely illustrated re-print of product documentation.

    Unique ER/Studio resource!
    By Steve Jorgensen
This book goes beyond the scope of most data modeling books that focus on the "what" aspects of data modeling by providing tool-specific instructions on "how" to create data models using ER/Studio Data Architect.

The "Read me first!" introduction does a great job outlining the typographic conventions used consistently throughout the book, as well as helping the reader plan his or her navigation through the rest of the book based on data modeling experience in general, as well as ER/Studio experience.

What makes this book unique is the "hands-on" exercises (including answers in one of the appendices!) that accompany most of the topics of instruction, providing real context for how to use ER/Studio to apply what you just learned. Anyone who likes learning new shortcuts will appreciate the inclusion throughout the material of numerous tips on how to "Become an ER/Studio Hotshot", as well as the ER/Studio Quick Reference appendix.

This book would be a welcome addition to any Data Modeler's bookshelf, but especially those who have plans to use, or are currently using, ER/Studio Data Architect!
