A sequel worth of the crown on the cover

Endre: Everyone's Favorite Norse God is Back. And This Time, It's Matrimonial

If you read and loved ST Bende's Elsker, you'll know that it's an exciting romance about a Norse god, Ull, who falls in love with a mortal named Kristia, and their love is as sweet as a Norse waffle. And they would get the happily-ever-after that they deserve, if it weren't for a little thing called Ragnarok, or the End of the World as We Know It. (And Kristia does not feel fine).

I have sworn to give away no spoilers here about weddings, processes by which mortal women become immortal goddesses, fire giants, or evil elf men, so I will stick to the romance stuff and my three favorite things about the book:

Fave thing #1: Elsker fans know that Ull is as romantic as they come and he does not disappoint his readers (or Kristia) in this one. And Endre moves beyond the point at which most romances stop: the promise of eternal love and marriage and the happily ever after. Aside from that whole Ragnarok thing, Bende's second Norse god romance focuses on what happens to a loving couple after they've found each other. How do you deal with your partner's job (especially if he is an assassin from Asgard)? How do you deal with his or her past (especially if it involves a hot chick with, um, physical enhancements who just won't go away)? How do you deal with his family and friends (especially if they are capable of smiting you with a magic hammer or transporting you to ten different realms with a nod)?How do you deal with the inevitable changes in your status as you move from singleton to spouse (and mortal to goddess?) Plus, it's hard enough entering into a partner's history and culture, but what if that history is centuries old and the stuff of legend? Bende deals with all of these concerns with grace, humor, and powerful imagination.

Fave thing #2: Like any new bride, Kristia has her work cut out for her, and another aspect of this book that delights me is how much sassier Krista is in this sequel. We all knew she was strong and spunky enough to match Ull before, even if she was not "the most graceful snowflake in the blizzard." But now she's got some mad fighting skills and the audacity to throw some shade at Loki, which I won't quote because you'll want to read it yourself. Kristia has a new attitude to match her new life and skills, and she discovers a whole new way to go snorkeling, among other things. It's good to be a god.

Fave thing #3: Kristia is not just blessed to be loved by a Norse god - she also has a pretty wonderful set of friends (and fully fleshed characters) both mortal and immortal. Among the immortals, Inga, Elsker, and Olaug return for the wedding and the battle and we learn about a pretty racy hobby Inga shares with Kristia. Among mortals, her bestie from home, Ardis, arrives and fits in perfectly with Kristia's Welsh university roommates who exercise their fashion sense and penchant for products "not available in stores." These characters provide much of the humor and the heart of the novel, making richer than a simple love story, though the love between Kristia and Ull is pretty darn epic.

Why are you still reading this? You need to get this book now. You won't be disappointed. It's okay. I'll wait right here `til you get back.

First thoughts after…
Holy poopy scoops! I'm ready for TRO!

How distracted did I get?
Endre is a wonderful sequel to The Elsker Saga. I thoroughly enjoy that it's a Sweet New Adult Romance, one you have to worry about recommending to friends for their daughters. Kristia is so much fun. I love watching her grow in friendships and personally. How she stands up to Ull to sort out a difference and dealing with a roommate with crazy ideas for wedding hair! Teehee… Olaug is the best I want to grab her and hug her. Elsker is quit the sassy Norn and I love her. I can't wait to see more of her. Inga was more present this time and that was definitely fun watching her relationship with Kristia and Skaadi. What, I didn't hop right into the Hottie mcTottie? I know something must be wrong! LOL Ull sweet Ull, he's ever present and protective and I love him even more. My biggest laugh came from my favorite hottie mctottie in the series Gunnar! Just his scene can make you laugh for a good five minutes or more! Skaadi I wanted to smack the crap out of. Let's just say as a Southerner I would have blessed her heart a WHOLE LOT! Endre is a fun and awesome Sweet Paranormal Romance that I recommend for anyone that enjoys these genres!

Awesome story

After reading the first book in this series, I was hooked. Endre was a lovely story about Kristia coming into her own. She really does grow up in this book. I totally enjoyed the fact that this story has ties to Norse mythology.

What is the best part is that both of the main characters, Kristia and Ull, are so honest and strong. It is great that Ull is so protective of her and he continues to try to protect her even though she calls him out on it. He does try his best to honor her wishes that shows how much he cares.

Even though this is a fictional story and not a true representation of the Norse myths, I think what Ms. Bende has done with the storyline is just awesome. She plays with those myths in a way that makes you think the characters are really like that in the myth. I am looking forward to next book.

Very enjoyable!

Enjoyed it very much! Just wished like with a lot of books that the ending would given a little bit more. When they reunited that was it just riding off to continue their life. Which is fine but after spending 2 months apart not knowing how the other was, some extra dialogue would have given it 5 stars.
I am also wishing the author would give Niall a happy ending. He just up and vanishes in the end and you never know what happened to him. That was very unfulfilling for me and left me empty on that score.

the second story of the brides, Maire's story is exciting and wonderful! The conflict and suspense is awesome! truly a great read! I really was happy this book was about her. Having a disability in those times was most of the time a death sentence, but loving family and the strength she shows during troubling times is uplifting. Love conquerors!

Excellent Story!

I love Miriam Minger! I'm working my way through all of her books. This is the Third book that I have read by her. I reccomend that you read Wild Angel BEFORE you read this book. This is the sequel to Wild Angel and reading that one first helps Alot with character development. I love the way Minger writes, everything is very intense. I could not put this book down! The heroine Maire appears timid in the book, but if you read the first book you have the knowledge that she just learned to walk for the first time since childhood two years prior and had been very sickly. Both her brothers were extremely over-protective of her because of this and She had just begun to gain a sense of freedom when she is captured by a group of Normans. She ends up being given to a Norman Baron (A very interesting and heated moment in the book I might add!). Again, I strongly suggest to anyone interested in reading this Book to read Wild Angel first, save yourself the confusion! Both are excellent books, you wont regret it! My only somewhat negative thought about the book was, WHAT HAPPENS TO NIALL? Maire's Brother? And where is his book dang it! lol:)

David Nicholls, is the international bestselling author of One Day and the forthcoming Us: A Novel.

David: Some of your past books have been adapted into major movies— Mystic River; Gone, Baby, Gone; and Shutter Island. How did the process for The Drop, the book and the film—evolve?

Dennis: 10+ years ago, I attempted a novel in which one of the characters rescued a dog from a trash can. I couldn’t pull the novel together, though. It broke my heart because I loved several of the characters—the guy who found the dog, his cousin who owned a bar, a woman he met, a messed up but well-meaning cop. A few years later, I went back to the first chapter, where Bob Saginowski finds the dog, and turned it into a short story. Some folks in Hollywood asked if I’d adapt it into a screenplay. The idea appealed to me because I still had that bench of secondary characters I hadn’t gotten a chance to use.

David: The Drop is your screenwriting debut. How does writing a screenplay differ from writing prose? Which do you prefer?

Dennis: A novelist is God; all originates from him and he has final say over his universe from a single blade of grass to breadth of the Milky Way. A screenwriter is an employee, one of maybe 150 people who contribute to a film. It’s so much less stressful being the employee than it is being God, no question, but maybe I like stress.

David: What was it like to revisit characters you initially created for a short story and bring them into a full length novel?

Dennis: It was like bringing them home. They’d belonged in a novel all along; it just took me over a decade to figure out what that novel/script/film actually was.

David: What’s it like to see characters you’ve created in print come to life on screen? Do you find that actors surprise you, draw out qualities that you didn’t recognize on the page?

Dennis: Great actors have no skin. They’re all exposed nerve and naked heart. To watch someone as gifted as Tom Hardy, Sean Penn, or Amy Ryan, to name just three, inhabit my characters and take them to places I never could have predicted—but to do so with conviction and honesty—has been profoundly gratifying.

David: The dog plays such a central role in this story. Where did your inspiration for him come from?

Dennis: I love dogs. Got one snoring at my feet as I write this.

David: The setting of Boston has always played an important role in your novels. What brings you back there?

Dennis: I was blessed to grow up in a unique city during difficult times. It’s given me a lifelong affinity for unique and difficult things.

David: The Drop is a gritty, dark story, and there are no conventional “heroes.” Do you ever have an author’s anxiety about characters’ likeability? Dennis: No. We loved Tony Soprano, a murderer who destroyed most of what he touched, because he was harried by his mother and couldn’t get his basic household appliances to work when he needed them to; we loved Othello, even after he murdered his wife, because most of us understand the pain of being treated as second class, regardless of our achievement. Audiences don’t what likeable characters, they want relatable ones. In The Drop what the characters want—absolution from past sins; respect; a knight to come to their rescue; confirmation of their faith—strikes me as pretty common stuff. Not dark at all. (Okay, a little dark.)

Fine if you want to read a movie instead of a Lehane novel.

Be forewarned: this is not a new "novel" by Dennis Lehane. It is a novelization of a screenplay developed from a short story, "Animal Rescue," by Lehane which appeared in an anthology, Boston Noir, in 2009--according to the flyleaf--and the rights to the "novel" are owned by 20th Century Fox.

I regret to say the writing, except for the first chapter, the aforementioned "Animal Rescue," only marginally resembles Lehane. The tone is the same, many of the words, but the skill, the talent, the depth of Lehane's usual work--the heart and soul--is missing. The paperback, admittedly an Advance Reader's Edition, is short, sketchy, sloppy, filled with typos and errors (toward the end, a main character, Nadia, is referred to as Natalie, and Bob's relationship to Cousin Marv is described one way in the early part of the book, and another at the end); nine-tenths of the book seems lazily written. The film, made from this expanded short story, may be excellent, but the book is misrepresented. As a courtesy to readers, particularly Lehane fans, the publishers and Amazon Vine should make that clear.

Too bad, too, because lonely bartender Bob Saginowski and Rocco, the puppy he rescues, are interesting and appealing, and I cared what happened to them. Rounding out the cast of book and film are Cousin Marv, who "owns" the bar where Bob works, a woman named Nadia, Eric Deeds, a sociopathic ex-con, a Boston detective named Torres, a threatened Catholic parish, and members of the Chechen mob who control the criminal enterprise in Bob's section of Boston. But all the characters, with the possible exception of Bob and Cousin Marv, are so thinly developed that we never get to know them fully or care about them. They are outlines rather than flesh and blood, with dialogue, mannerisms, and behaviors that border on cliche. They read, in effect, like a "treatment." The plot is somewhat suspenseful, but it, too, lacks mood and depth, and the denouement seems a little too contrived and pat. The Drop reads like what it is: a book-from-the-movie. It's visual, short, less than typical Lehane--except for the character of Bob and Cousin Marv, perhaps, and not all that satisfying.

We are back on the mean streets of Boston in "The Drop," by Dennis Lehane. Christmas is over and Bob Saginowski, who tends bar for his Cousin Marv, spends his days working, going to church, and looking for a companionable female to alleviate his loneliness. He has little luck with dating, but as fate would have it, Bob comes across a puppy who was abused and subsequently discarded. Bob takes in and cares for the dog, whom he names Rocco. Unfortunately, nothing ever comes easily for Bob or Marv. Someone gets wind of Bob's new pet and pronounces himself the dog's rightful owner. In addition, members of a ruthless Chechen syndicate, who actually own the bar that Marv manages, are none too pleased when masked gunmen hold up their establishment and abscond with five thousand dollars. There will be consequences.

In this concise and hard-edged novel, Lehane entertains us with punchy, amusing, albeit profane dialogue, and brief sketches of hardened, selfish, and greedy individuals, some of whom are as dim-witted as they are heartless. Although several of the characters are quick to take offense, they fail to realize that they have no monopoly on rage. Blood flows freely in "The Drop" and, as the story progresses, our hero must decide whether it is in his best interests to avoid confrontation at all costs.

"The Drop" is about clueless lowlifes who try to score easy money, put one over on their enemies, and avoid being blown away. In addition, a suspicious detective named Torres takes a dislike to Bob and comes sniffing around, looking to bust him for something. The plot is fast-paced and edgy, and Lehane dishes up some twists that few will see coming. This is a bleak and savage world in which people go to great lengths to maintain a semblance of self-respect, fend off anyone who poses a threat, and in Bob's case, find love. To sum up what seems to be Dennis Lehane's worldview: "The worst in men is commonplace. The best is a far rarer thing."

Great to have Lehane back in his element...a fun, fast read.

It all started with a puppy.

Bob Saginowski is a sad-sack bartender, living in the house he grew up in, spending his time shuffling between work, home, and mass at his childhood church. He's a loner; his only real companion (and that's a bit of a stretch) is his cousin Marv, who used to own the bar Bob works at, although the bar is now really owned by Chechen mobsters. Bob spends his days wishing for a way out of his loneliness, and he's hiding a secret or two as well.

One cold winter night while walking home from work, he finds a badly beaten puppy in a trash can. Although the responsibility of caring for something scares him, he rescues the dog and ultimately bringing it home with him. When he finds the dog he also encounters Nadia, a world-weary woman who has seen more than her share of problems. Without expecting it, he finds himself caring for both Nadia and the dog and is utterly unprepared for how it feels.

But all is not rosy for Bob—not only is his church closing, but the bar gets robbed, he catches the eye of a dogged cop determined to make something of himself again, and the dog's original owner, an unstable ex-con with an agenda of his own, returns and wants what he believes is his. It's more than enough to make Bob wonder what path he should follow, and what the consequences of his actions will be.

Dennis Lehane is one of my favorite authors of all time. While this isn't as good as Mystic River or a number of his Kenzie and Gennaro novels, I really like Lehane best when his writing leans more toward grittier, violent character studies than some of the historic material he's covered in his last two books. I love his use of language, both in dialogue and description, and while not everything that happens in the book is surprising, he still knows how to create some good tension.

I learned after I read The Drop (in a little more than one day) that it is an expansion of a short story Lehane wrote in 2009, which explains why, even at just under 250 pages, I felt the book was a little short, and would have liked more time with Bob, Marv, Nadia, and even Detective Torres. There was a lot of intriguing material that could have been developed further, although I didn't feel as if the book ended abruptly or was too short.

I forgot that a movie adaptation of this book is due out later this year. While I try not to read books that close to a movie adaptation (especially one with a little suspense in it), I'm looking forward to seeing how the actors bring to life the characters I've pictured in my head. If you're not planning to see the movie, and you enjoy crime novels, this is one to read. It's a fast read, it's well-written, and most importantly, it's good to have Dennis Lehane back in his element. (Of course, now I want another book, Dennis.)

My 5 year old LOVES to have me read him this book. We homeschool. My son can tell you all about black holes & tons of other things. He now says that he wants to be a scientist when he's an adult, so he can learn all about the planets & such. :)

Kid Tested and Approved

I bought this for my sweet daughter, who is 10, and has been disappointed that so much science time has been getting cut from her class time at her school lately. She says she loves the range of topics this book covers, and that the text appears in a lot of bubble boxes rather then paragraphs. She's willing to read paragraphs, but she is at a stage where she finds it more engaging to have the text broken up some. She also says she really likes the way the pages are laid out with the background colors, and she really likes that some of the pages are different colors. So basically, she loves the visual layout and finds it more interesting to look at for that reason. There also haven't been any issues with the binding, and this is her favorite of the things I've given her in the past couple of months, and has declared it to be quite awesome.

My 7 year old loves this book, he's always telling people the facts he memorizes. it must be well written because he doesn't yawn the entire time he's reading like he does with some other books.

I enjoyed some of the more detailed discussion of why things were engineered as they were. Most of the season histories and biographical information of the important people have been covered in more depth elsewhere. Even if you are a Ferrari fan, don't feel compelled to run out and buy this. If, like me, you grew up learning about F1 in the 70's when Ferrari 312Ts were king (and Andretti beat them with the ground effect Lotus) this book might be of more interest.

HIghly recommended book on the legendary 312T series. I enjoyed reading about the drivers (they have become legendary too). I probably would have preferred to trade the section on acquiring one of these cars for more on the technical description, as I'll never be in a position to buy a 312T series car. Racing fans and scale modelers will love the photos, which include historic shots and close-up details.

Bathing without a Battle second edition

This book should be in the resource library of every nursing home. The information about bathing residents with memory loss is based on research conducted in nursing homes. The bathing experience can be very stressful for residents with memory loss. Enhancing the bathing experience not only helps residents but will prevent injuries to staff members.

If you are struggling with a person who has Dementia/Alzheimer's disease and getting them to come into contact with water this book offers understanding and compassion regarding the dynamics of bathing when someone is ill. What I liked best about this book is that it truly is "person-directed" provides useful tips such as how to focus more on the person than on the task or how to help the person feel more in control. I have used several of the techniques and have been very successful. This book changed my perspective and approach to the bathing process. While I am not a nurse I have been caring for an individual in my family who has more than moderate Alzheimer disease and it has been a significant challenge in the bathing process. I think this book is for anyone facing this issue and the book is written very clearly, with sensitivity and compassion towards both the caregiver and the individual who has dementia. I highly recommend this book.
