When your supposed childhood friend commits the most brutal betrayal, completely gutting you, destroying the life you thought you were meant to have? But instead of drowning in my own insecurities, I’m being consumed by my boss, Tyler Conklin. His secrets are devouring me, along with his mystery and charming grin. He wants me, his advancements are clear; but so are his exertions to keep me his biggest secret of all.
I’m not sure if I can tolerate being his covert lover, especially when he has so many secrets of his own.

Great series
By ANJasper
How I stumbled upon Brooke Page and Conklin's Trilogy is beyond me at this point but I am so glad that I did. I really loved her writing style and that she was telling a story that was different from anything I had been reading. In a book world that is full of billionaires and virgin's we get a woman fighting to get back on track and a sexy architect. The journey that Becca and Tyler embark upon is full of twists, turns and moments that left me thinking 'what just happened?'

The trilogy follows the story of Becca and Tyler. Tyler is Becca's boss at her new job after she returns to her home of Grand Rapids from living it up in Florida. They're both attracted to one another but Becca is very insecure. She battled with being overweight and bullied for it for most of her life. By her mother no less. That woman is something else that I'm not even going to get started on. Tyler wants her with an intensity that he can't deny but he isn't willing to put a relationship with her for the world to know about. Becca is alright with that until she isn't. She sees the softer side of Ty that he doesn't show everyone else and she knows she wants more. Little by little she breaks out of her shell and starts demanding the things she wants and needs, respect at the top of that list.

Tyler is enamored with Becca's shy self confidence and the way she starts to face her fears head on. The only problem is, Tyler has secrets of his own that he isn't willing to share. Mainly because he doesn't have answers to all the questions they will cause and he doesn't want to put her into danger. Because danger is lurking in more than one corner. I really loved the way the intensity built throughout the entire series with a sweet love shining through all the ups and downs.

There is a lot going on in the final book, that being said, everything tied together very nicely in the end. The trials and tribulations that Tyler and Becca suffer through in this book only solidifies their relationship. Becca's willingness to not only fight for herself but for Tyler showed just how far she had come. No more was she the wallflower that would let everyone walk all over her. I thought Ty was letting his guard down but he was broody and closed off as ever. As more secrets from the past are revealed, Tyler is left questioning all that he has known for most of his life. After a very shocking moment that had my jaw on the floor, he retreats even further into himself. It takes a good portion of the book to sort out that mess and just when I thought Tyler and Becca would sail off into their happily ever after...BAM!!! Another unexpected twist in the plot. Holy smokes I wasn't expecting that from this story at all. But it did make sense in the grand scheme of things (sorry no spoilers from me, just know that you've been warned to hang onto your hair).

Overall, this series gave me everything I wanted and then some. Tyler and Becca took me on quite the journey from the start of their relationship right through to the end of book three. Their connection, passion and understanding of each other is the romance that most can only dream, or read, about. It just goes to show how loving yourself and having the love of the right person makes you into the best version of yourself. If you like your books full of drama, angst, steam and some suspense then this is the series for you- I promise you won't be disappointed.

Boook #1

This is the first book that I have read from this Author.
I gave this book 5 stars.

This is Becca and Tyler's story.

Becca is a beautiful young lady, who has basically been put down her whole life from her family to her friends. She thinks she is fat, and ugly and not worthy of being with anyone. Her mom is always telling her how she needs to eat less, and how she will never be a size 2 but she needs to be better. Now Becca is only a size 8 to start with and once she decides to cut out all potatoes and junk food and basically anything that is not a vegetable or meat she goes down to a size 4, but she is still feeling like she is ugly and is way more comfortable in a six. Now you may say really? A size 8? I would kill to be a size 8, but society has made it so that we are not comfortable in our own skin, this was a big issue for the writer to write about, so many times we get caught up in what we think others should think, and we are never happy with ourselves.

Becca has a boyfriend named Connor who she has been dating for quite awhile, that is until she finds him in her bed with her best friend Ashlynn. Ashlynn always wants everything that Becca has, and she didn't stop at the boyfriend either. She continues through out the book trying to trump Becca every chance she gets. Becca is a very passive, timid woman, and to a point that is good, but I think she is this way because everyone is always saying something about her weight, Ashlynn is always pointing it out right along with her mom, you shouldn't eat that, or it's ok that your not a size 2.

Becca broke my heart, she so wants to just be loved, for who she is, that she doesn't even love herself. She is constantly trying to make herself better, She needs to learn to love herself, or she is never going to ever be happy.

She graduates from college and moves in with her other bestfriend Jamie and she decides she is just going to have fun and sleeps around with a whole bunch of guys they meet at bars. She finally lands a job back home and moves back. She has a beautiful condo that her parents set up for her, and she is not happy with the fact that she is home and under their thumb once again, she wants to be able to do this on her own. But again Becca is timid and doesn't like to cause waves so she stays quiet.

At her new job she meets Tyler and he is the bosses son, he runs the company with his dad and two brothers, now Tyler has his own issues and those issues cause him to want to keep her a secret, and not because of the way she thinks, she thinks it's because she is not perfect and that she is no way good enough for him, but they have to learn to deal with these things together, and both of them are very hard to get to open up, so while she thinks she is not good enough, and that she is fat and frumpy. Tyler is not like that, he loves the way she looks, and doesn't have issues with any of that.

The book continues to deal with Tyler and Becca's relationship and their issues, but is this going to tear them apart? Someone with all the issues that Becca has can she put up with being a secret and if she does for how long?

This book really spoke to me, maybe because I related to it so well, I found Becca to be a beautiful woman with some major issues, I do believe that Tyler can help her face some of her fears, and that he will help bring out that feistyness that she is missing. AND it is there. She just has to be willing to let it out.

Tyler when he finally told his story my heart broke too, these are two beautiful, damaged souls looking for someone to just love them. And I do believe they have found that in each other.

I loved going on this journey with them, and their story is not over, but their was not a major cliff hanger, which I loved also, it left me wanting more, but I was also satisfied.

Thank you Brooke for a beautiful story, about learning to love yourself, about learning that you might not always be perfect but in someone's eyes they will see you as perfect! And isn't that what we are all looking for ?

I can't wait to read the next book!!

Excellent Tutorial for Beginners
By Rahim Mohd Said
Those who wish to learn about Adempiere or iDempiere will find this book very useful. By following the tutorial on each page, readers will get a full understanding of how the software works, what are the minimum data required to execute each function and many other crucial information. While some functions have changed since the current version is now iDempiere ver 1.0c, it is not difficult to find the changes in the procedures by googling the respective topics. iDempiere is a very powerful ERP system which is free of charge.

Missing information
By artcien
Adempiere is by far the best Open Source ERP solution, but like all other Open Source ERPs it lacks of a good manual. The information is in pieces all over the internet and is not well organized in the Wiki. It is also always incomplete in the sense of the software itself. In this case, is the installation process. If you plan to use Adempiere inside your LAN, then go ahead and buy the book. It will give you the basis to start using Adempiere, but to use the client application over the internet you need a lot more than this book. The book needs more information on Jboss configuration to work with Adempiere.

Monchi likes to write poems, hang out with his cousin, and tell stories to his uncle. Then one day, a member of the local gang tells him it's time to join up. Monchi is scared but excited. The older boys give him the handshake, girls talk to him, and even teachers are afraid of him. But when a tragic event changes everything, Monchi must make an important decision. There is no easy answer to his dilemma, but the love and respect of his uncle help him find a way out. Written in both English and Spanish, It Doesn't Have to Be This Way is a compelling tale of a young boy's encounter with the world of gangs.

From Publishers Weekly
Monchi, the 10-year-old narrator of Rodr!guez's (Am?rica Is Her Name) well-intentioned if oversimplified cautionary tale, describes his encounter with a gang. When Clever, Monchi's neighbor and a gang member, announces, "It's about time you joined the Pee Wees," Monchi is gratified that the older boy "wanted to be friends and wasn't going to hurt me." Thus, he accepts the invitation, despite warnings from his older girl cousin, Dreamer: "I used to hang around with Clever and them guys.... I don't like some of the things they do." On the night he is to be "jumped in" (beaten for 60 seconds by fellow gang members) as a rite of initiation, a rival gang shows up with guns and shoots Dreamer, who has come to dissuade her cousin from participating. After Monchi learns that she will live, he decides not to join the gang. Unfortunately, all the episodes in the bilingual story get equal weight (a visit with Monchi's uncle, a conversation with Dreamer about a knife in Monchi's possession, etc.) so that the story never builds to the climax when Dreamer is shot. Similarly, Galvez's portraits are lifelike but fall short of creating tension. For example, in a spread that foreshadows Clever's malevolence, Clever gets lost in the gutter. The message is valuable, but gets muddied in the telling. Eve Bunting's Your Move, illus. by James Ransome, offers a more forceful picture book treatment of the same subject. Ages 6-up. (Aug.)

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-5-"Gangs" is the theme of this bilingual picture book. Ten-year-old Monchi likes to read books and write poetry and lives in the barrio. He is invited to join the Encanto Locos' Pee Wees, the neighborhood gang, by an older member, Clever. In order to join, Monchi must prove himself by first witnessing another initiate as he gets "jumped in" (beaten by five gang members for 60 seconds). Then he is taught how to dress, tie a bandanna on his head, put his placa (name) on the school wall, steal a bicycle, and buy a knife. However, the night Monchi is to be jumped in, his older cousin shows up to plead with him not to join and she is shot by the rival gang as they drive by. Fortunately, she recovers. Soon after, Clever shows up with a handgun and a plan for revenge. In the end, with support from his family, Monchi makes the right decision. Rodriguez's moral is evident but not spelled out, making this book a springboard for discussion. Galvez's realistic illustrations of the characters reflect their strong emotions.

From Booklist
The author of the acclaimed adult title Always Running: A Memoir of La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A. (1993) tells a picture-book story of 10-year-old Ramon (Monchi), who is pressured to join a gang in the barrio. Monchi is reluctant to become part of the violence. He likes to read and write poetry; he likes helping his uncle fix cars; he's friends with his older girl-cousin Dreamer. Partly through fear, he does go along with Clever, the older boy in the Encanto Locos gang, and Monchi finds it's fun to get respect at school. He learns to steal a bike. He buys a knife. When Dreamer tries to stop him, she is shot in rival gang crossfire, and, in his shock and sorrow, Monchi breaks free and finds a true mentor in his uncle. The violence is not exploited, but it's there: the beatings, the lure of power, Dreamer in a wheelchair after the shooting. In the climax, Monchi refuses to be drawn into the fight for revenge. The message is spelled out, but Rodriguez's personal experience, as a teenage gang member and now as an adult counselor, gives the story immediacy. The text is bilingual, first English, then Spanish, on each page, with richly colored, full-page realistic paintings that show a diverse Latino cast in the dramatic narrative. Great for group discussion about the yearning for a mentor, for community, for courage. Hazel Rochman

Must have for any teacher
By A Customer
This book is the best book I have read dealing with the pressures and dangers of joining a gang. The author gives you a realistic view of what it means to be a part of a gang. The story follows a young boys quest to belong. You get to watch this young boy slowly drift away from his family and friends into the gang lifestyle, until something tragic makes him realize that it doesn't have to be this way. This book does an incredible job of making you realize all that kids go through when faced with pressure to join gangs. This is a book that I am going to use in my classroom to open the eyes of my students. I believe this book is informing and empowering kids to not join gangs.

Little Book...Big Idea
By Christopher Bowen
It was the first time I heard the echo of my voice all semester. Why did my own words seem so loud to me? It was because it was the first time I had them all quiet at once. Something had been momentarily stirred in my room of under-supported kids; the kids we typically leave behind. It was their story. Or it was their uncle's story. Maybe the story of a friend. But, many knew these characters. Many knew these issues. And they had finally let me in. With a book, no less. The best way for a teacher to sneak inside. And I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Though it's a picture book, never does it talk down to the reader. It treats all who enter its pages with dignity and respect. And my middle school students returned to it over and over again. That's the true sign of a great book.

I LOVE this book!

****A review for A kiss down under book blog****

I absolutely loved this book and these characters! Mia who is a strong woman who is also broken at the same time who goes through some hard times throughout the whole book whilst dealing with her very delicious boss Noah who may I add looks like Thor or Chris hemsworth which makes the book even more yummy. While he's trying to figure out a way to be with her and she's trying to ignore the attraction of course as we all know the attraction can't be ignored for long and something has to happen. I strongly suggest buying this book and seeing exactly where their story leads, I promise it won't be something you regret doing. I absolutely can't get enough of this book and am looking forward to a lot more from this author!

Good book, although a little wordy.
By Jeanette Iacovacci
4 stars! The story is set in Western Australia, which was a nice change in pace from the majority of the books I read set in the US. The two main characters, Mia and Noah bounced between what I felt were "ordinary people" and then seemingly going through some "out of the ordinary" situations. I enjoyed the story line, there were a few twists and turns that I didn't expect, and of course a bit of a cliffy leading in to book 2.

I will say that while the writing in this book was descriptive, it sometimes took away from the story. I appreciate when an author can really set the scene, but I started to notice myself skipping over some of the wordy parts just because they weren't necessary to the story. I also noticed some repetitiveness throughout, Everything was "large", and poor Noah was seemingly ALWAYS hard.

This was a good book overall. I will read book 2 because I need to know what happens next!

Impressive Debut Novel
By M. Berens
I loved this book! The characters were well developed and easy to relate to. Noah and Mia weren't perfect and had "real people problems." The author described the settings in such detail that I felt I was really there. The plot was incredibly interesting, and I found it hard to put the book down. I was on the edge of my seat more than once, worrying for Noah and Mia! The book does have a note at the beginning, warning of some potentially disturbing content. I was very appreciative of the warning, as it could have been an emotional trigger for me. I was surprised to find out that this was the Lilly Barrett's debut novel, as it was very well written. I enjoyed the book so much that I immediately jumped straight into book two! I will be recommending this book to all of my friends and look forward to future books by Lilly Barrett.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9-In this revision of a 1984 title, teenage Peg and her father go on a camping vacation to a supposedly uninhabited island in the Sea of Cortez. Ignoring the warnings of the mainland locals (and Peg's own uneasiness), they arrive on the island only to become quickly victimized by an unseen assailant they label Se?or Psycho. Their only means of transportation is destroyed, the lenses in the girl's sunglasses are crushed, and the diabetic father's insulin kit is stolen. Subtle changes in this version make the terror even stronger, with more of a psychological twist and posttraumatic analysis. It is up to Peg to save her father, and to decide whether, in order for him to survive, she can kill another person. Only when they are rescued do they meet the perpetrator face to face, and years later Peg returns to get the full story. While it's happening, the tension and suspense will keep readers turning pages, but it seems unnecessary for Taylor to state specifically Peg's moral dilemma in this edition. It comes through quite clearly in the course of the story.

The Island

Peg Toland and her father Sam plan a camping trip to Mexico that turns out to be a fight for their lives. Sweet Friday Island is the planned destination, but two strangers, Raul Clemente and a very old woman, inform them that the island is not a good place to go. Peg and Sam decide to head to their planned vacation anyway and ignore the warning.

Camp is set up on Sweet Friday so Peg and Sam go for a swim. After a few hours they return to camp to fid missing items, their boat damaged, and Peg's clothing with knife holes. Their camping items that were taken could be considered weapons i.e. axe, fishing spear, knife. Unexplainable was Peg's missing makeup bag. Sam attempts to repair the boat with no success. They wished now, that they had listened to the stranger's warnings.

As the day continues, Peg and Sam realize there is someone out to get them. Peg nicknames their tormentor "Senior Psycho". Senior Psycho throws huge spiders down on them. He howls in the night, trying to get them to emerge from their camp area so he can squash them with boulders. In the day while searching for the psycho, Sam sprains his ankle and could barely walk. To top this all off, Senior Psycho takes Sam's shaving kit tatter holds all of his insulin and syringes needed for his diabetes. Without his insulin shot, Sam would soon be in a diabetic coma and death would follow shortly after.

Peg knows she must take action. With her father slipping into a comma, she plans to get the insulin back to save his life. Before he became useless, Sam made gas bombs to use on Senior Psycho. He took the two glass jars they had, filled them with motor oil, and inserted a fuse made of braided cloth. Peg prepared to use them. She followed the psycho into a small hidden cave, which she found was his home, and threw gas bomb in after him. When the smoke cleared she entered the cave cautiously and found Senior Psycho on the ground. He appeared to be dead so she grabbed the insulin and ran back to her father. Desperate to save him, Peg gave her father the shot. Not knowing how much to put in the syringe, she filled it three quarters of the way and hoped for the best. Sam slowly came to and Peg burned their damaged boat, hoping someone would come save them.

Raul Clemente and the old woman came to the island and were furious to see Peg and her father. They told the couple that they should have listened to the warning and they knew bad things were going to happen. Raul ran to the cave and dragged Senior Psycho out and onto the boat. He was not dead after all! Raul assisted Peg and Sam, with their belongings, onto the boat as well. They returned to the mainland.

Five or six years later, Peg continues to have nightmares about the trip. She sees a psychiatrist who tells her over and over to return to Mexico. Eventually she does and speaks to Raul. They talk and he informed her that senior Psycho was his father and the old woman was his mother. He said that they were both dead now. Senior Psycho was on Sweet Friday hiding from the police. He killed a man a long time ago and was insane. After talking a while Raul apologized for the events that occurred on Sweet Friday. As she left Mexico she felt better, knowing the truth about the crazy trip her and her father had taken.

As I began this book I thought it was boring and I didn't like it at all. It started slow but then the action took place. When they had to take revenge on Senior Psycho was the part that made the book interesting. You learned their struggle for survival. I enjoyed every part of the book except for the first quarter of it. So if you haven't read Sweet Friday Island, I think you should.

This book is a about a teenager named Peg and her father. Every year they go camping. However, this time they camp out in the wrong place. On a island in Mexico there is a crazy man in the area. This island is the one Peg is going to. Although they have been warned to not visit this islad they still do. Once on the island their boat was destroyed by the man. Peg and her father worked to servive all the harsh things the man does. Then her father decides to kill him before he kills them. They make gasoline bombs. However pegs father is ill and she is forced to protect her father with the bombs. When through one at him in the cave and retrived their things. Later they learn he is a crimanal one the run and is still alive. A few years later Peg returns to the iland one last time to learn that the same woman who warned they of the danger was that crazy man's wife.
My favorite part in this book is when is when Peg goes in search of the man. She goes around the island and finds him in his hut. She lights the straw hut on fire. Somehow he is able to get away. then she chases him into a cave. she realizes he is trapped and throws one of the bombs. the blast seferly injured him.
I liked this part because it got me excited. I forgot I was reading. All these images in my head. The text was very descriptive. The ending was fast and different from other endings.

I loved this book! I know want to get my own copy. This book totally captivated me in every way. It has an amazing story plot and climax. If Iwas the author I would have changed the ending though. It ended to abrubtly, no downhill climax. But still it was great. About the Author
A little more than thirty years ago Tom Clancy was a Maryland insurance broker with a passion for naval history. Years before, he had been an English major at Baltimore’s Loyola College and had always dreamed of writing a novel. His first effort, The Hunt for Red October, sold briskly as a result of rave reviews, then catapulted onto the New York Times bestseller list after President Reagan pronounced it “the perfect yarn.” From that day forward, Clancy established himself as an undisputed master at blending exceptional realism and authenticity, intricate plotting, and razor-sharp suspense. He passed away in October 2013.

Mark Greaney has a degree in international relations and political science. He is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Tom Clancy Support and Defend, Tom Clancy Full Force and Effect, Tom Clancy Commander in Chief, and Tom Clancy True Faith and Allegiance. WithTom Clancy he coauthored Locked On, Threat Vector, and Command Authority. He has written six books in his own Gray Man series: Gunmetal Gray,Back Blast, Dead Eye, Ballistic, On Target, and The Gray Man. In his research for these novels, he traveled to fifteen countries, and trained alongside military and law enforcement in the use of firearms, battlefield medicine, and close-range combat tactics.

The man sitting in the restaurant with his family had aname familiar to most everyone in America with a television or an Internet connection, but virtually no one recognized him by sight—mainly because he went out of his way to keep a low profile.

And this was why he found it so damn peculiar that the twitchy man on the sidewalk kept staring at him.

Scott Hagen was a commander in the U.S. Navy, which certainly did not make one famous, but he had earned his notoriety as the captain of the guided missile destroyer that, according to many in the media, almost single-handedly wonone of the largest sea battles since the Second World War.

The naval engagement with the United States and Poland on one side and the Russian Federation on the other had taken place just seven months earlier in the Baltic Sea, and while it had garnered the name Commander Scott Hagen significant recognition at the time, Hagen had conducted no media interviews, and the only image used of him in the press featured him standing proudly in his dress blues with his commander-white officer hat on his head.

Right now, in contrast, Hagen wore a T-shirt and -flip-flops, cargo shorts, and a couple days’ stubble on his face, and no one in the world, certainly no one in this outdoor Mexican caf in New Jersey, could possibly associate him with that Department of the Navy–distributed photo.

So why, he wondered, was the dude with the creepy eyes and the bowl cut standing in the dark next to the bicycle rack constantly glancing his way?

This was a college town, the guy was college-aged, and he looked like he could have been drunk. He wore a polo shirt and jeans, he held a beer can in one hand and a cell phone in the other, and it seemed to Hagen that about twice a minute he glared across the lighted patio full of diners and over to Hagen’s table.

The commander wasn’t worried, really—more curious. He was here with his family, and his sister’s family, eight in all, and everyone else at the table kept talking and eating chips and guacamole while they waited for their entres. The kids had soft drinks, while Hagen’s wife, his sister, and his brother-in-law downed margaritas. Hagen himself was sticking with soda because it was his night to drive the clan around in the rented van.

They were here in town for a club soccer tournament; Hagen’s seventeen-year-old nephew was a star keeper for his high school team, and the finals were the following afternoon. Tomorrow Scott’s wife would drive the rental so her husband could tip back some cold brews at a restaurant after the match.

Hagen ate another chip and told himself the drunk goofball was nothing to worry about, and he looked back to the table full of his family.

There were many costs associated with military service, but none of them were more important than time. The time away from family. None of the birthdays or holidays or weddings or funerals that were missed could ever be replaced in the lives of those who served.

Like many men and women in the military, Commander Scott Hagen didn’t see enough of his family these days. It was part of the job, and the times he could get away, get his own kids someplace with their cousins, were few and far between, so he knew to appreciate this night.

Especially since it had been such a tough year.

After the battle in the Baltic and the slow sail of his crippled vessel back across the Atlantic, he’d put the USS James Greer in dry dock in Norfolk, Virginia, to undergo six months of repairs.

Hagen was still the officer in command of the Greer, so Norfolk was home, for now. Many in the Navy thought dry dock was the toughest deployment, because there was a lot of work to do on board, ships did not regularly run their air conditioners, and many other creature comforts were missing.

But Scott Hagen would never make that claim. He’d seen war up close, he’d lost men, and while he and his ship had come out the unquestionable victors, the experience of war was nothing to envy, even for the victorious.

Russia was quiet now, more or less. Yes, they still controlled a significant portion of Ukraine, but the Borei-class nuclear sub they’d sent to patrol off the coast of the United States had allowed itself to be seen and photographed north of the coast of Scotland on its return voyage to port in Sayda Inlet, north of the Arctic Circle.

And the Russian troops that had rolled into Lithuania had since rolled back over Russia’s border to the west and to the Belarusian border to the east, ending the attack on the tiny Baltic nation.

The Russians had been embarrassed by their defeat in the Baltic, and it would certainly surprise everyone in this outdoor Mexican restaurant in New Jersey to know that the average-looking dad sitting at the big table under the umbrellas had played a big part in that.

Hagen was fine with the anonymity. The forty-four-year-old was a pretty low-profile guy, anyway. He didn’t hang out with his family in his uniform and regale them with tales of combat on the high seas. No, right now he goofed off with his kids and his nephews, and he joked with his wife that if he ate any more chips and guacamole before dinner, he’d sleep in tomorrow and miss game time.

He and his wife laughed, and then his brother-in-law, Allen, got his attention. “Hey, Scotty. Do you know that guy over there on the sidewalk?”

Hagen shook his head. “No. But he’s been eyeing this table for the past few minutes.”

Allen said, “Any chance he served under you or -something?”

Hagen looked back. “Doesn’t look familiar.” He thought it over for a moment and then said, “This is too weird. I’m going to go talk to him and see what’s up.”

Hagen pulled the napkin from his lap, stood up, and began walking toward the man, moving through the busy outdoor caf.

The young man turned away before Scott Hagen could make it halfway to him, then he dropped his beer in a garbage can and walked quickly out onto the street.

He crossed the dark street and disappeared into a busy parking lot.

When Hagen got back to the table Allen said, “That was odd. What do you think he was doing?”

Hagen didn’t know what to think, but he did know what he needed to do. “I didn’t like the look of that guy. Let’s play it safe and get out of here. Take everybody inside to the restaurant, use the back door, and go to the van. I’ll stay behind and pay the bill, then take a cab back to the hotel.”

His sister, Susan, heard all this, but she had no clue what was going on. She hadn’t even noticed the young man. “What’s wrong?”

Allen addressed both families now. “Okay, everybody. No questions till we get to the van, but we have to leave. We’ll get room service back at the hotel.”

Susan said, “My brother gets nervous if he’s not sailing around with a bunch of nukes.”

The James Greer did not carry nuclear weapons, but Susan was a tax lawyer, and she didn’t know any better, and Hagen was too busy to correct her because he was in the process of grabbing a passing waiter to get the bill.

Both families were annoyed to be rushed out of the restaurant with full plates of food on the way, but they realized something serious was going on, so they all complied.

Just as the seven started moving toward the back door, Hagen turned and saw the young man again. He was crossing the two-lane street, heading back toward the outdoor caf. He wore a long gray trench coat now, and was obviously hiding something underneath.

Hagen had given up on Allen’s ability to manage the family, and Susan wasn’t proving to be terribly aware, either. So he turned to his wife. “Through the restaurant! Run! Go!”

Laura Hagen grabbed her daughter and son, pulled them to the back door. Hagen’s sister and brother-in-law followed close behind with their two boys in front of them.

Then Hagen started to follow, but he slowed, watched in horror as the man on the sidewalk hoisted an AK-47 out from under his coat. Others in the outdoor caf saw this as well; it was hard to miss.

Screams and shouts filled the air.

With his eyes locked on Commander Scott Hagen, the young man continued walking into the outdoor caf, bringing the weapon to his shoulder.

Hagen froze.

This can’t be real. This is not happening.

He had no weapon of his own. This was New Jersey, so even though Hagen was licensed to carry a firearm in Virginia and could do so legally in thirty-five other states, he’d go to prison here for carrying a gun.

It was of no solace to him at all that the rifle-wielding maniac ahead was in violation of this law by shouldering a Kalashnikov in the middle of town. He doubted the attacker was troubled that in addition to the attempted murder of the one hundred or so people in the garden caf in front of him he’d probably also be cited by the police for unlawful possession of a firearm.

Boom!

Only when the first shot missed and exploded into a decorative masonry fountain just four feet to his left did Scott Hagen snap out of it. He knew his family was right behind him, and this knowledge somehow overpowered his ability to duck. He stayed big and broad, using his body to cover for those behind, but he did not stand still.

He had no choice. He ran toward the gunfire.

The shooter snapped off three rounds in quick succession, but the chaos of the moment caused several diners to knock over tables and umbrellas, to get in his way, even to bump up against him as they tried to flee the caf. Hagen lost sight of the man when a red umbrella tipped between the two of them, and this only spurred him on faster, thinking the attacker’s obstructed view could give Hagen a chance to tackle the man before getting shot.

And he almost made it.

The attacker kicked the umbrella out of the way, saw his intended victim charging up an open lane in the center of the chaos, and fired the AK. Hagen felt a round slam into his left forearm—it nearly spun him and he stumbled with the alteration to his momentum, but he continued plowing through the tables.

Hagen was no expert in small-arms combat—he was a sailor and not a soldier—but still he could tell this man was no well-trained fighter. The kid could operate his AK, but he was mad-eyed, rushed, frantic about it all.

Whatever this was all about, it was deeply personal tohim.

And it was personal to Hagen now. He had no idea if anyone in his family had been hurt, all he knew was this man had to be stopped.

A waiter lunged at the shooter from the right, getting ahold of the man’s shoulder and shaking him, willing the weapon to drop free, but the gunman spun and slammed his finger back against the trigger over and over, hitting the brave young man in the abdomen at a distance of two feet.

The waiter was dead before he hit the ground.

And the shooter turned his weapon back toward the charging Hagen.

The second bullet to strike the commander was worse than the first—it tore through the meat above his right hip and jolted him back—but he kept going and the shot after that went high. The man was having trouble controlling the recoil of the gun. Every second and third shot of each string was high as the muzzle rose.

A round raced by Hagen’s face as he went airborne, dove headlong into the man, slamming him backward over a metal table.

Hagen went over with him, and both men rolled legs over head and crashed to the hard pavers of the outdoor caf. Hagen wrapped the fingers of his right hand around the barrel of the Kalashnikov to keep it pointed away, and the hot metal singed his hand, but he did not dare let go.

He was right-handed, but with his left he pounded his fist over and over into the young man’s face. He felt the sweat that stuck there, soaking the man’s hair and cheeks, and then he felt the blood as the attacker’s nose broke and a gush of red sprayed across his face.

The man’s hold on the rifle weakened, Hagen ripped it away, rolled off the man, heaved himself up to his knees, and pointed it at him.

“Davai!” The young man shouted. It was Hagen’s first indication this shooter was a foreigner.

The attacker rolled up to his knees now, and while Hagen shouted for him to stay where he was, to stop moving, to put his hands up, the man reached into the front pocket of his trench coat.

“I’ll fuckin’ shoot you!” Hagen screamed.

An unsheathed knife with a six-inch blade appeared from the attacker’s coat, and he charged with it, a crazed look on his blood-covered face.

The kid was just five feet away when Hagen shot him twice in the chest. The knife fell free, Hagen stepped out of the way, and the young man windmilled forward into the ground, knocking chairs out of the way and face-planting into food spilled off a table.

The attack was over. Hagen could hear moans behind him, screams from the street, the sound of sirens and car alarms and crying children.

He pulled the magazine out of the rifle and dropped it, cycled the bolt to empty the chamber, and threw the weapon onto the ground. He rolled the wounded man on his back, knelt over him.

The man’s eyes were open—he was conscious and aware, but clearly dying, as compliant now as a rag doll.

Hagen got right in his face, adrenaline in control of his actions now. “Who are you? Why? Why did you do this?”

“For my brother,” the blood-covered man said. Hagen could hear his lungs filling with blood.

“Who the hell is your—”

“You killed him. You murdered him!”

The accent was Russian, and Hagen understood. His ship had helped sink two submarines in the Baltic conflict. He said, “He was a sailor?”

The young man’s voice grew weaker by the second. “He died... a hero of... the Russian... Federation.”

Something else occurred to Hagen now. “How did you find me?”

The young man’s eyes went glassy.

“How did you know I was here with my family?” Hagen slapped him hard across the face. A customer in the restaurant, a man in his thirties with a smear of blood across his dress shirt, tried to pull Hagen off the dying man. Hagen pushed him away.

“How, you son of a bitch?”

The young Russian’s eyes rolled back slowly. Hagen balled his fist and raised it high. “Answer me!”

A booming voice erupted from near the hostess stand at the sidewalk. “Freeze! Don’t move!” The naval officer looked up and saw a New Jersey state trooper with his arms extended, pointing a pistol at Hagen’s head. This guy didn’t know what the hell was going on, only that, in a mass of dead and wounded lying around the nearly destroyed restaurant, some asshole was beating the shit out of one of the injured.

Hagen raised his hands, and in doing so, he felt the wounds in his side and arm.

His brain went fuzzy, and he rolled onto his back. Stared up at the night.

Behind him now, over the shouts and screams of shock and terror, he was certain he could hear his sister crying loudly. He could not understand this, because he thought he’d given his family the time they needed to run.

True Faith and Allegiance
By Patricia A Byers
I bought this book with some misgivings,I have read every Jack Ryan book written. I did not want to be disappointed with the author change. I must now apologize to Mark Greaney for my doubts. This book was every bit as good as all the rest of the series. I loved the fact that we have many players involved, it is not an easy read. I like a book I have to think about, that does no t go as planned in your mind. There are many things going on at the same time. I love the fact Jack Jr has grown but the best part was the inclusion of Jack Sr, after all he is the character that got us involved in the first place. All good characters must come to an end, but please not yet. Fast paced, believable situations and the hope for yet another book. Good job.

It Almost Feels Like Tom Clancy is Still Alive and writing.
By Iron
Tom Clancy is gone. But the characters he has created lives on, under the pens of two very different authors. Grant Blackwood, I'm sorry to say, is a hack. The men of the Campus are cardboard figures when portrayed by Mr. Blackwood. Fortunately, Mr. Greaney is an excellent writer who has shown a flair for writing, with well paced prose that very much recalls Tom Clancy's own writing in days gone by. This author shows great depth of research on all matters political, technological, military and human. This particular story of ISIS-directed attacks on the soil of America is frightening in its realism, and when you read it you can't help but be impressed by the work of our real life guardians in law enforcement and the military that something like this has not actually happened in real life. There are those who would love to commit acts of atrocities like this, but obviously the men and women who are responsible for our safety have been doing their jobs and doing them extraordinarily well. It was a delight to read about President Jack Ryan, Jack Jr., Ding, Clark, and the other operatives of the Campus. Wonderful to see that they now live on under the guidance of a writer who understands the qualities that have made them beloved staples of our reading enjoyment.

Buy this book. You won't be able to read it in one sitting but you will want to. This is the kind of book that, when you finish the end of the epilogue, you spend another few seconds looking to make sure there isn't more, because it's that good. I will eagerly await the next Campus book by Mr. Greaney. I strongly advise that you do not waste time reading Campus books by Mr. Blackwood because, frankly, they are far inferior.

not the best, but also no reason to avoid if you are a Jack Ryan saga fan.
By James M. Johnson
Jack senior doesn't have a strong role in this phase of the on-going story, but it is nice to 'hear' him speak rather than use 3rd party comments to carry the plot. The reason I rated this as 'some twists' rather than 'full of surprises' is that the characters are so well developed and the reader can anticipate how they will react. Better this than suddenly take them out of character.

The ending seemed a bit abrupt with some dangling threads, but there was enough information to imagine where those threads would lead. It felt a bit like the author was rushed to make a deadline.
