No better photo depiction of Rio Grande's last stand in Utah!

Mike Danneman is a prolific model railroader, photographer and a gifted writer. His thoughtful descriptions of each photo, detailed explanations of the operations of the last D&RGW locomotives in daily service, and graphic depiction of railroaders going about their day brings a great human element to the book. Helper, UT and the so called "Dirt Train" are the centerpiece to the book, and operatins in both areas are well documented. Loads of great color photos, detailed captions and great stories are related thoughout the volume. Mike tells many stories in the book, and each character has a specific personality that comes through to the reader clearly. The book also details the last days of the final D&RGW diesel in service on Union Pacific. There's an exacting account of how the unit was accurately renumbered to replace the block lettering on the cab, more faithfully recreating the prototypical number style applied to the flanks of nearly all D&RGW locomotives. The final trip to Denver is covered as well.
I would highly recommend this book to any D&RGW fan, anyone interested in Helper Utah operations, the Dirt Train, and the the of the breed; D&RGW 5371.

The Last Falling of the Flag of the Rio Grande

Beautiful photos of my old stomping grounds. It was wonderful to revisit the land I left and the rumble I felt nearly 55 years ago. I even found pictures of a couple of my high school classmates. If you like the unique "tunnel" engines and the grit of real work, I'm sure you will enjoy this book.
