One of the best things about Perl and CGI for the World Wide Web is the seamless way the author incorporates terminology into her explanations. Elizabeth Castro, author of HTML 4 for the World Wide Web, understands the intermediate user: someone who would be bored by a beginner's guide, but isn't ready to step up to heavy-hitting programming texts either.
In Perl and CGI, she explains basic concepts--such as the difference between a compiled and an interpreted script--within the text, so there's no need to keep flipping back to the glossary. Readers should be familiar with HTML and comfortable with technical explanations, diagrams, and general vocabulary.
Anyone trying to get a grasp on something as complex and powerful as Perl will appreciate Castro's relatively straightforward technique. For example, in the first chapter, Castro explains some basic Perl concepts sensibly: that the $ stands for the s in scalar; the @ sign stands for the a in array; and that the % that labels a hash or associative array indicates two circles on each side of the slash as parts of a pair. Good text for beginners

With 71 other reviews there's no much to add -- but I'll throw my two cents in here anyway.
If you're looking for an 'in-depth' book on Perl/CGI -- look elsewhere. If you're a beginner like me, this is a book to buy.
Seriously, if you're teaching yourself then you'll always need more than one book on whatever subject you're learning. You'll want to suppliment this volume with other manuals. But viewed by itself, the author does an admirable job of getting her subject across -- even to thick folks like myself. I found concepts and codes shown in this book to be much clearer than in other texts I've read. Now I can go back to the 'other texts' and (hopefully) understand what they were trying to teach me.
I also believe that I will find this to be a good reference volume as I write scripts. Each function is laid out in step-by-step detail and won't take a lot of reading or thinking to refresh my memory.
If you want to learn Perl and you're just starting out. This is one of the first books you should buy. Quite reasonable at about $15, too.

If you need to learn perl quickly, this is the book for you

I needed to pick up perl in a few days to help out with a web site. My current knowledge? Pretty good HTML, pretty basic C++. This book did the trick. In a few days I was up and running making additions to scripts and writing my own functions.
If you need depth you won't find it here, but if you need to get up and running quickly, this is the best book of its kind. Especially if you like to skip around and get the big picture quickly, there is no handholding step by step by step by step by step here. It's condensed material with simple code examples that you can look at and say - Oh, I get it.
So I've sold this book enough, but it really did help me out.

I'm a PERL beginner. I checked out several books from the library and this one, PERL and CGI, was the best fit. It gives a very good overview of what PERL is and its syntax. After just a couple of hours of reading I think I could start writing my own simple scripts. Easy to read and understand. I liked it so much I bought a copy from Amazon to keep as a reference! Not as an exhaustive reference --it's not that --but as a reference for all the common techniques and principles. Although there are a lot of illustrations, they're not really critical to the book. My only criticism is that the print in the pictures is so small it's hard to read.
