Great for the masses, but not for math people

This is my least favorite Dunham book, and not because it is for the non-math masses.

This book does not really seem to have any real organization to it as his other works. And his writing is targeted to appeal to the pedestrian reader he tries a bit hard to be amusing.

It almost seems that Dunham is out of his comfort zone trying to write for the masses and not turn people off with the math.

Yes there is the math in the book, but it really is nothing of interest to the math student or math types. Unlike Journey through Genius, where he does not seem to worry about whether he lost the average reader and writes more towards the math crowd who want the math and historical.

In his other works he really does a great job of presenting the topics in a cohesive manner which develops the context and almost tells a story. In this book the organization is almost random.

The 5 stars is because for the masses, this is an easy read and hopefully will entice readers to really go back and at least try to develop a deeper understanding of math.

Also, Dunham does have his favorites and he makes that clear in his books. Everyone will have their favorites in a subject so broad with such a long history of great discovery.

Enjoyable, but Kindle version in a pretty bad state.

Enjoyable as a quick dip into a range of different fields of mathematics. Unfortunately, the Kindle version suffers from many, many typos misformatting in the mathematical equations. In some cases they are completely illegible, and the reader is left to guess what a symbol was supposed to have been.

This book was required for a college math class. It was completely useless. Not worth purchasing AT ALL. It is all about he history of math. Holds no valuable information in actually performing math.

This class was a college algebra math class. Therefore, we learned NOTHING about the history. A complete waste of money.

I really enjoyed this book!

I've been following Aaron Fisher's articles for The Art of Tea magazine and the online tea journal "The Leaf" for a couple of years now, so I was really looking foward to reading a full-length work devoted to the Way of Tea. Surely you will find or may have read books on Chado, or Chanoyu, the Way of Tea as expressed by the Japanese tea ceremony... This book is positively different and will be a pleasant counterpoint to others you may have read in that it centers on what the tea ceremony is really all about in a spiritual sense, as opposed to other books that aim to serve as as instructional guides on how-to-perform the Japanese tea ceremony. I'd say the author does an excellent job bringing readers to the root of what drinking tea is all about. The book begins with a history of the masters that paved the way of tea, before continuing in a personal style where the author narrates his own experiences with tea before inviting and encouraging the reader to experience the tea ceremony first hand... for real... deeply.... a tea ceremony that revolves around living in the present and being at one with the Tao, where tea and life become synonymous. This can easily seem a bit too much for some people... but others will certainly understand... or at least strive to.

An in-depth discourse on the many paths of tea

I most appreciated the interweaving of history and tea culture as seen through the stages of philosophical and spiritual thought. The intelligent and penetrating insights and interpretations offered by the author with regards to the major Taoist and Zen philosophies are engaging to the reader. Fisher ably uses key examples of "tea Zen" from the ages to show readers that mindfulness can be found not only in each cup of tea, but also in its ritual and accompaniments. A core theme of the book is that the essence of tea is found not in the debate or study of its characteristics or in the compulsion to find, grab and "own" tea wisdom & knowledge, but through a mindful approach to contemplating, enjoying, and sharing the beauty of each brew. Overall, the book is a gracious offering by the author to share the life-altering experiences that tea can have, which I think many introspective tea lovers will be able to relate to. I think this book will be well received by those looking for an experience of tea beyond the brew itself.

About the Author

Eve Ball held bachelors and master?s degree and an honorary doctorate from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Along-time resident of Ruidoso, on the edge of the Mescalero Apache reservation in southern New Mexico, she conducted her interviews and her research among the Apaches over three decades. Nora Henn and Lynda A. Sanchez, friends who help Ball prepare her manuscript, have since pursued Indian studies and the history of Lincoln County, New Mexico.

Dan Thrapp, who was a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, was a foreign correspondent for the United Press in Argentina, Greece, Italy, and the United Kingdom and, for a number of years, an editor for the Los Angeles Times. He wrote extensively on the West. He books include Victorio and the Mimbres Apaches, also published by the University of Oklahoma Press.

Native American "Genocide"

I had not realized until reading this book that the Native Americans were the victims of "genocide." The American Calvary and the majority of those who were in charge of the various reservations were in it for their own benefit; not the Apaches or any of the other tribes mentioned in the book. The Cavalry and the Mexicans thought nothing of killing the Apache women and Children while the Apaches did not kill women and children unless it was absolutely. It is my understanding the Indians on reservations today are starving. I have sent money to them. The United States Government (USG) owes these people and should do all that is necessary to help them. The USG helps people in foreign countries; it is time to help our own people!!

A great resource that is not clouded by military officer reports but is highly cross referenced with other resources. Highly recommended for any one truly interested in the plight of the Chiricahua.

About the Author

Holly Scoggins teaches horticulture at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. Her courses cover ornamental plant production and marketing, herbaceous landscape plants, and greenhouse management. Her research and extension focus includes production of perennials and field trials of hops. She holds a PhD in horticultural science from North Carolina State University.

Dr. Mark Bridgen is a professor at Cornell University and director of the Long Island Horticultural Research and Extension Center. He earned a PhD in plant physiology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Dr. Bridgen teaches plant propagation, and his research specializes in ornamental plant breeding, plant tissue culture and micropropagation, and floriculture.

Excellent introduction to the Art and Science of Tissue Culture. Easy read that covers all stages which even includes formulas and processes for wide variety of plants.Only warning is that if you are thinking of getting into Tissue Culture as a hobby or vocation, this book will do nothing to discourage you. When you complete it, you will be convinced you will be able to reproduce all your favorite plants. You will buy a kit or the supplies, buy shelves and lights, then flats and inserts and potting soil. Soon you will need a greenhouse to "harden" the young plants. Then a couple of acres of "grow houses". Delivery trucks. Agrrrr!!

Must have if you want to start microprop at home

It gives you pretty much everything you need, lays it out in very understandable fashion, and is a relatively short book so it's not too hard to get through. If you are interested in microprop at home and want to learn how it's done--this will give you the knowledge you need to pull it off.

If you are looking for advance knowledge for a specific species you are trying to microprop, this is likely not the book for you unless your just starting out--it's very good for learning what microprop is, how it works, and all the basics. Something I've learn from my research though is that even very similar plants (to varieties of the same species) the recipe to microprop can be VERY different.

But if your buying this to play around at home, make new plants from ones you already have, or investigate what Microprop is--I highly recommend this book.

Great overview of micropropagation. Includes general instructions, and modifications that may be necessary for lab setups that are larger or smaller than normal. That extends to materials, equipment, and methodology, with both simple/low-cost and highly-scalable methods discussed. I don't think that there is a better resource for someone interested in the very basics of micropropagation of plants for research purposes.

Effective and efficient testing methodologies that are readily applicable to requirements analysis. I found the "Problem Pyramid" tool to be particularly useful. Differentiation between the 'business requirements' vs 'system design requirements' was enlightening. Excellent knowledge for account managers and business analysts as well. Strongly recommended.

Excellent book by an experienced practicioner

I wanted to find a book that I could recommend to my requirements-challenged clients. This was the first I bought and the last I'll need. The author has a solid command of the subject and obvious real-world experience. Nestled among the chapters are over 60 "tests" to tell if you have real requirements.

I only gave it four stars because I was put off by the author's tilting at windmills in the first few chapters as he tries to stave off imagined criticism.

If you ever wanted to know if your requirements were accurate and complete, this book will help. As Robin says on p. 13, "...we're going to intermix discovery methods with techniques for testing the adequacy of requirements." Using his problem pyramid - which includes a way to measure the problem and the solution - Robin discusses several techniques to elicit and define requirements.

Robin defines 64 techniques to test requirements - throughout a project. For example, test method #17, "identify assumptions" is common sense that too few people remember.
