A Comprehensive Learning Tool for Industrial Electricians

This book is surprisingly complete, yet it is easy to use. Don't get me wrong, this is not liesure reading, but it is one of the most easily understood, yet comprehensive, books on industrial electrical equipment that I have seen in 25 years in the business. It starts with the basic subjects of Electricity, Magnetism, AC Current, Inductance, and Capacitance, and explains them very well in simple concepts. It then moves on to Transformers, Generators, and Motors, explaining how to use them, how to calculate power, torque, etc. Sizing considerations and post-installation calculations are demonstrated. Then the book goes into motor control methods, including control circuitry, older motor controllers, and Solid State Motor Controls (Drives), and even a little bit on Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC's). This book is highly recommended to anyone working in industrial maintenance, drive manufacturers and service engineers, industrial service shops (motors and/or controls), and aspiring industrial system engineers.

Even thou I have not completed this book in its entirety, I am pleased to say that I have found it to be informative.
I have been in the electrical industry for almost twenty five years and in all that time there have been several aspects of electrical theory which I have never really fully understood.
This book has made some of the mathematical problems seem so simple and easily understood that I now feel that I have just come out of my apprenticeship.
Anyone who wishes to understand the logic behind electrical theory needs to read this book.

In his exhaustive treatment of the world's most complex religious organization, Reese, a Jesuit priest who has written about the U.S. Catholic hierarchy (Archbishop: Inside the Power Structure of the American Catholic Church, Harper San Francisco) approaches his subject from a sympathetic yet critical perspective and manages to accomplish two tasks. He describes what is, based on more than 100 interviews with Vatican insiders, and he prescribes what might be, based on his own sense of the church's place in the contemporary world. Though he avoids discussing personal lives of curial officials, he humanizes a vast bureaucracy with an occasional bit of gossip and a few revealing Vatican jokes. For example, one official offered a careerist's recipe for survival in the Roman curia: "Don't think. If you think, don't speak. If you speak, don't write. If you think and if you speak, don't write. One need not be Catholic or even religious to appreciate this fascinating look into the Vatican, an institution with worldwide influence. Reese, a Jesuit priest and political scientist, provides detailed information, much of which is not available elsewhere, on the internal workings of the Vatican both as city-state and the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. That information ranges from how popes are elected and how each of the Vatican offices operates to how the Vatican bank functions and what sort of fire department the Vatican has. Reese also offers insights, e.g., that Cardinals tend to elect an older pope to avoid a long reign, and notes procedures for deposing an insane or otherwise incapacitated pope. With its wealth of information, historical background, and analysis, Reese's work should be an important addition for a variety of libraries. An Enlightening Look Behind the Vatican�s Closed Doors

One young girl wrote in a book report "This book tells me more about hippopotamuses than I wanted to know." Unless you have a special interest in the Vatican inside story, this book may also tell you too much. But since the Roman Curia of the Catholic Church is one of the three most efficient corporate structures in the world, and since its work touches the lives of a billion Roman Catholics (and much of the rest of the world as well), and since its failings have been at the center of controversy in the Catholic world, the book is important. It is a well written and exhaustive summary of how the central Catholic government is structured and makes its decisions. The author, who has written on church governance at all levels, is a recognized expert in the field. Despite the controversial nature of the topic Reese treats the Curia fairly and objectively. Those who complain about the Curia should read this book, for while many of their complaints may be justified, they might be surprised at the amount and complexity of the work the Vatican does, the care and dedication with which they try to do it, and the problems and difficulties they labor under. The section on the internal culture of the Curia is particularly enlightening, and the author's concrete and professional suggestions for reform are valuable.

Ever wonder what it'd be like to be a Vatican bureaucrat?

Thomas Reese, Jesuit professor and journalist, has carved a very narrow niche for himself as an author, explaining the organizational mechanics of the Catholic church. Most people would find his books to have far too much detail, but there are a few, like me, who are curious about what really happens behind the closed doors of the Catholic administrative apparatus. His 1989 book, "Archbishop," described how dioceses are run, and "Inside the Vatican" describes how the Vatican functions. What decisions do cardinals actually make? What is it like to be a Vatican ambassador to a foreign country? What is it like to have a career as a Vatican bureaucrat? (One tidbit: No air conditioning!)
If these are things you've wondered about, this is the book for you. Reese approaches these things as though he were an anthropologist or a management consultant, with a keen eye for the nuances of interpersonal relationships within the Vatican bureaucracy. My only complaints are that the amount of detail can be overwhelming, and Reese sometimes gets bogged down in a wooden style of writing. It's best to start reading this book in the middle, because the beginning is rather dry. On the other hand, the anecdotes are a strong plus. To give one example, the story of John Paul II reprimanding the Archbishop of Denver to his face creates a mental image that is hard to forget.
The last chapter is the most provocative, where Reese suggests reforms that are both logical and unrealistic: He argues that Vatican administrators should not be allowed to become cardinals, which in papal elections would cause a monumental power shift toward those who are in closer touch with the laity. Reese suggests priests play a major role in selecting bishops, as was the case before the 1800s, in contrast to the current practice in which the pope appoints ultraconservative bishops who can't relate to anyone in their diocese.
According to Reese, the underlying problem is that the Vatican is more interested in doctrinal purity than keeping people in the church. Meanwhile the laity are voting with their feet, gravitating to pastors who ignore papal instructions, or leaving the church altogether.

A great book out of print

I have had plantar fascitis for over a year now. I have treated my feet with physiotherapist, applied ice in the area, stretched as indicated by doctors and although the pain has decreased the symptoms remain. I have started practicing these exercises daily and combined it with weekly shiatsu therapy. This combination has receded the pain and corrected the structure of my body posture. I feel better and more relaxed. This book explains in great detail and with an easy to follow methodology the many exercises that strengthen the meridians. The first section of the book on medicine and healing makes the book worth purchasing. The exercises that follow are neatly explained supported by many photographs that make it fun to practice.

Fantastic. Start here if trying to get pregnant!

Absolutely, hands down, helped me get pregnant. Doctors had said no way, with an FSH of 35, really low AMH, and a very low follicle count. After two years of trying, they said donor eggs were the only way. I followed the diet, got rid of plastics, chemicals, and all the other stuff Fett warns about, and was pregnant naturally in 2.5 months. Granted, I was also doing Julia Indichova's work, seeing a TCM acupuncturist every week, doing fertility yoga, drinking herbal infusions, and about six other alternative healing practices, but it was this book that provided me with the scientific evidence for why all that other stuff would work. Believing is half the journey! If you are a Type A organized/planner who is trying to get pregnant (or will be soon), or has just been diagnosed with low egg quality/reserve, or unexplained fertility, read this book today! Also good to share with a scientifically minded partner who is anxious to jump into IVF without waiting for you to spend a couple months juicing, meditating, and seeing the acupuncturist.

Also- now that I am pregnant (17 weeks) we are so glad we know about the dangers of BPA, plastics, SLS, phthalates, etc., and have eradicated them as much as possible from our lives. Sometimes I think that the baby was waiting for us to figure this stuff out and start living cleanly before coming!

Best of the best in this genre...and it works--we have a baby!

Best book yet. I have read many in this genre and this is the most well researched out there on lifestyle and best supplements. We were trying for #2 for 5 yrs, had 3 miscarriages (chromosomal), many IUIs that were chem pregnancies. then read this book and both of us took the recommended supplements and avoided some of the major contaminants like BPA and such. The combo of DHEA, CoQ10 ubiquinol, melatonin, NAC, ALA, and methyl folate for 3 mos along with good prenatal vitamin prior to an IUI w/ follistim shots. It got us pregnant with a keeper--just birthed a healthy baby boy at 43-44yrs old! Miracle!

Great read, especially in preparation for IVF.

Well written book with great use of scientific data. When you're trying to conceive, it's easy to get lost in a lot of anecdotal stories. Not everything you read on the internet is true. Women who suffer from infertility are willing to go through hell and back to conceive and unfortunately, a lot of people know this -- so they use it against them and try to sell them a "miracle cure".

This book sorts through all of the scientific evidence that is backed by trials and research -- not some hippy dippy chakra shaman trying to make a buck off of someones desperation. Infertility is expensive to begin with and you have these people that peddle these "herbs" and "supplements" that aren't clinically tested. It really burns me if you can't tell.

Being someone in the medical/research field -- I appreciate this books use of actual data. Please keep in mind that we are not all created [physically] equal and that the cause of your infertility may not be the cause of mine. This book tries to tackle infertility causes as a general whole and then goes into a little more detail into the common causes (PCOS, Endo, Male Factor). Some of the recommendations are a little difficult to implement in my opinion but we did the ones we could. We started WELL IN ADVANCE (8 months) to our IVF too (you can't start making changes one week before your IVF -- it won't work and the author explains that in the book). I am now 33 weeks pregnant with a healthy little girl.

Before this book I was taking dozens of herbs and supplements (unregulated by the FDA mind you) a day. I would choke on some of them because I was tired of swallowing these horse pills. After reading this book, I was able to reduce the number of pills because some of the recommendations you read about online (Maca Root, Royal Jelly, etc) are just useless and there's scientific data to back it up. I stress the phrase: SCIENTIFIC DATA because anecdotal experiences don't really count since there are so many other unaccounted variables at play here.

In short, I recommend this book to anyone suffering from infertility.

Melanie Lockert is the personality behind the award-winning blog, Dear Debt, where she chronicled her journey out of $81,000 in student loan debt. Through her blog, she inspires readers to break up with debt by writing their very own breakup letter to debt.

In 2015, Melanie (and her journey out of debt) was named one of the top five most inspiring personal finance stories of the year by Yahoo! Finance. She currently works as a freelance writer and event planner. Melanie and her work have appeared in Business Insider, The Huffington Post, Yahoo! Finance, INC, and more.

Originally from the Los Angeles area, Melanie moved to New York City to attend New York University. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theater and a Master of Arts in Performance Studies. After stints in New York City and Portland, Oregon, she returned to Los Angeles, where she currently resides.

You are not your debt

Being in debt is lonely and mind numbing, but it doesn’t have to be. Dear Debt is a story of one woman on a journey getting out of $81,000 of debt, without living with her parents or making six figures. She launched a new career and money mindset in the process

The beginning of the book frequently mentions the psychological and societal attitude towards debt. A super important discussion that doesn't happen near enough in personal finance, which makes me glad it was included in the book. People, starting when they’re teenagers and signing for their first set of student loans, are led to believe debt is a normal thing and not something to worry about. Everyone’s doing it. Melanie talks about how she broke free from the perspective and took charge of her debt situation.

Melanie went through college and graduate school pursuing various creative endeavors in theater and the arts. She got her bachelor’s degree in theater and master’s degree in performance studies. Because of her activities in the creative field and non-profit work experience, she thought she was destined to a path of low wages and struggle.

Many people have similar mindsets to where she was at. They think they will never be able to reach financial independence or be in charge of their money due to their situation. The book breaks down different steps on moving past a limiting money mindset to developing a proactive view towards money.

Money is not good or bad. Money is simply a tool for opportunities. The book covers how to get started with side hustles: strategy, building your brand and dealing with things like taxes. Lots of helpful practical advice.

The biggest lesson from the book about money and debt is shifting your money mindset. We all have a unique mindset when it comes to money: the way we view saving, making more, and spending triggers. Mindsets and bad habits can be remedied and improved upon. Changing your money mindset is arguably the most important thing towards staying motivated to eliminate debt and achieve your financial goals.

Debt is a Terrible "Lover"

So here's the thing, we all know that getting out of debt is simple: spend less than you make and use the excess to pay off debt. Easy, right? Not so fast. There's this little monkey-wrench called emotion. It's the main reason we get into debt and stay there. What I LOVE about Melanie's account on attaining debt freedom is that it personifies debt exposing the terrible, abusive "lover" that it can be in our lives. Who can't relate to that? Once you see the addictive, unhealthy debt mentality for what and "who" it is, it makes it even easier to make the commitment to "break-up" with debt. What's more is that it includes LOTS of information on why adding extra income can only help you in this journey. I respect the coupon clippers, but I realize there's a lot of value in increasing your skill set and demanding more money for your time and experience. I read this book from cover to cover in one sitting as it's truly engaging and inspiring. Add this to your collection of debt-free, inspiring stories!

If you want to get out of debt, the easiest way to keep going is to be inspired by those who've already done it. Melanie has achieved one hell of a feat and her advice is VERY practical and doable if you REALLY want to get out of debt. She proved it and so will I!
