Readers are spared the author's raspy voice in this examination of the lost years of Jesus and his "mystical life." Browne makes considerable effort to keep minds open and religious formalists unoffended. Much of the content is conveyed by and confirmed by Browne's spirit guide, Francine, a factor that may deter some readers. But the interesting data she presents makes this a fascinating listen that addresses the questions of whether Christ really died on the cross, married, had children; hypothesizes on what he did in his "missing years," and corrects what seem to be errors, intentional or not, in the Gospels. Amazing and well told story of Yeshua's Life Details

I am so very glad that Sylvia's publisher encouraged her to write this book, because most of us Christians are fascinated by the life of Yeshua and those surrounding him, including Mother Mary, and especially Mary Magdelene, two individuals that we know very little about from the Synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke-Acts and John. Her book goes to great detail and length to explain the role of Mother God in the life of Yeshua, and how he came to die on the cross in an interesting and refreshing style. It also clearly explains the split in the church between the Jewish Christians, the Gnostic Christians and the Pauline Christians and the differences in philosophy in an interesting manner. I loved the book and could not put it down. I started it at 10 pm and had to finish it in the next four hours, which is possible because her writing style is interesting, exciting and clear--not difficult or scholarly.

In any case the one thing which she did not explain well, and I see it in many comments on reviews of her book on Amazon, is that people are concerned that Mother God is not mentioned in the bible, but this is not entirely accurate. She is, because the most popular name for God in the bible is "Elohim", mentioned some 2500 times, and it is derived from "Eloah" meaning Goddess with a masculine ending. The article used before it is gendered fe/male plural, with Hebrew being a gendered language, unlike English. Another word for god is "El Shaddai" which means the "mighty breasted one" and is gendered female. She forgot to mention this, so I thought this might help everyone better understand where the Mother God in her book comes from, or at least according to the bible. The unfortunate thing about this language interpretation, is only few biblical and intellectual scholar are aware of this, with the bulk of translations of the bible having been done by promoters of a patriarchal religion, which Sylvia does mention quite frequently in her book, but perhaps not always as completely as she should.

In any case, the details of the life of Yeshua and the holy women are amazing and it explains the strong existence of the Cathars in France for many decades in early Christianity.

Sylvia has once again, done a wonderful and credible job in promoting a loving, caring and nurturing Mother and Father God in this book who assisted and supported a Messiah throughout a long and notable life.

The book expands upon other books such as the Tomb of God and the Da Vinci code, which it is not incompatible with. These are also books I would highly recommend on this subject with the exception that the Tomb of God is much more scholarly and drier than reading Sylvia Browne. Another good series that is similar to the content of this book are the Essene Gospels of Jesus by Dr. Szekeley and Edgar Cayce's book on Jesus, which again, reaffirm the statements made by Slyvia in this book.

She also states in her book that much more archeological evidence will be uncovered in the next few years that will more clearly establish the fact that Yeshua survived the crucifixion, lived to have children, and Mary Magdelene was in fact instrumental in spreading his work and gospels.

I highly recommend the book if you are at all interested in the details of the life of Yeshua and those of the holy women who stayed with him and supported him throughout his mission work here on earth.

Jane Harper has worked as a print journalist for 13 years both in Australia and the UK. She is originally from the UK and moved to Australia in 2008, where she lives in Melbourne and writes for the Herald Sun. An Outstanding First Novel

Overnight I finished Jane Harper’s novel - a story I found difficult to put down until I reached the last page. For a first novel it is outstanding. The author writes in beautiful, descriptive language and, at the same time, keeps socking the reader between the eyes with the revelations that unfold in this terrible story of a brutal family murder in an outback country town - a town that seeps with anger, bitterness, violence, oppressive heat and blow-flies.

As a reader I came to feel either a strong affinity or hate/anger towards each character. It’s that kind of book. The characters are developed so well that I am still thinking about them as real people as I write this review.

I appreciated the details of country life and the little things described that only people who have lived in small Australian outback towns can fully appreciate.

The complexity of the story - the “whodunit?” builds almost to screaming level by the time the truth starts to emerge. Beyond solving the brutal murder of three family members, we become immersed in other powerful stories from twenty years back that could be linked with the current crime. Or are they?

This is a five out of five novel for me and I’ll certainly be looking out for Jane Harper’s future novels.

Very well executed but....

This debut effort by Jane Harper has been lauded as nearly perfect. And critics are nearly correct. The novel is as close to perfect as one can get in terms of plotting, character, and setting. Truly, it is a wonder to read (and I DO recommend you read it!). So why 4 stars instead of 5? I'll get to that in a moment.

The story is set in a small rural town in Australia (wonderfully described....feels like you are there), Federal Agent Falk returns from his job in Melbourne to his hometown for the funeral of his childhood best friend, now dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after killing his wife and young child (leaving their infant alive, though). Small towns usually contain small minds and judgement has been passed. It's not comfortable. So it's with considerable trepidation that Falk agrees to a request from the deceased's parents to look a little closer into the deaths. This present-day mystery is cleverly woven with the last questionable death that occurred in the community decades earlier, one that Falk was suspected of contributing to.

As you may have seen from my status updates, I did NOT guess the culprit until revelation was imminent in the story. And that is a very good thing (who likes a mystery where you've known whodunit for hundreds of pages before it's revealed?). Just about everything about this novel was a very good thing. Which brings us back to my 4 stars rather than 5. I deducted one star simply because in 3 or 4 months, I probably won't remember the plot or characters. Some books - even if they aren't technically perfect - just have soul. They resonate with you. You remember them years after you turned the last page and still grab them for re-reads. The Dry just wasn't one of those books.

I still recommend it (highly) because of the enjoyable experience of the actual read. And you might experience more "soul" in it than I did.

A DROUGHT EXACERBATES TENSION & HATE

My thoughts: I was immediately reeled into The Dry: A Novel, from the setting in a small Australian town, to the characters I recognize from small towns in which I have lived.

Many such characters thrive on secrets, gossip, and the judgment of others, and they hold onto grudges. The characters in this novel carried those traits to the extreme. Perhaps it was the drought and the losses they all suffered that intensified these attitudes and behaviors.

When Aaron Falk returns to Kiewarra, he only plans to stay through the funeral, but then Luke’s parents talk him into helping sort through the financial records.

The more he digs, the more he starts finding that many things don’t add up in the story of what happened to Luke and his family, so he stays on. But the townsfolk don’t want him there, badgering him, trashing his car, and one even pulled a gun on him.

Now those were some angry folks. Could Falk find the answers he is seeking, both to solve the murder in the present, and even find some answers about what happened in the past? Could he somehow manage to steer clear of the rage of the town?

Third person narratives told the story in the present, and an alternate perspective revealed bits and pieces of what had happened to Ellie Deacon twenty years before.

So many possible suspects came up in the story, and I found myself asking questions about each of them. Was Gretchen, Luke’s old girlfriend, as sweet as she seemed, or was there a dark side beneath the surface? What about Ellie’s father and cousin? Surely they were behind everything that happened, since their malevolence is like a thunder cloud on the horizon. But when the final reveal started to unfold, I was stunned. I thought that this person was the least likely perpetrator, which goes to show that in life, and in good mysteries, you can often overlook the one right in front of you. 5 stars.
