One of the better romance books I’ve read in a long time

I seldom give five stars unless a book is truly good, and this one was.

I liked this book so well I stole time to read it in less than a day. This has been extremely unusual for me lately.

The premise of the story is the hero married the heroine 8 years ago and then fled England for the continent, having never consummated their marriage. The heroine is abandoned by his family and has none of her own to see to her interests. So when the hero’s cousin starts using his influence over her missing husband’s finances to force the heroine into his bed, she decides to find her degenerate husband and get pregnant with his heir so she can take back the finances.

After getting lessons from a prominent courtesan in London, the heroine accomplishes her mission, but falls in love with her husband in the process. He falls in love with the courtesan she is pretending to be, and then flies into a rage when he learns of her deception. The rest of the story is based on their reconciliation and happily-ever-after ending.

Pros

1. I actually liked the heroine. This has been rare for me as of late. She has a problem, she tries to solve it. I don’t have to be told how bold she is, I see it in her actions. In her desperation to save herself, her aunt and their servants. She is willing to buck society and learn from a courtesan, she hunts down her husband, and she seduces him. Yes, she runs off when she realizes she’s in love with him, especially given her deceit. I found that a little harder to believe, given her dire straits and need for an heir, but okay, I still liked her.
2. I liked the hero. Yes, he’s a cad, especially at first, but you can actually sympathize with him when you learn more about him. And you see it for yourself when he cares about his friend (who is actually helping the heroine with the deception). I also felt like his actions and responses were genuine. He didn’t suddenly become a gentleman when he returned to England, and I love, love, love how he handled his cousin who was trying to force his wife into performing sexual favors.
3. There were genuine sparks between the characters.
4. There was also genuine tenderness between the characters.
5. I wanted the characters to get together. I really wanted to see them get their happily-ever-after.
6. I liked the supporting cast, too. They each have personalities. Simon, the white knight. Quint, the disheveled gentleman. Fitz the devoted bodyguard. Aunt Theo with her cakes and sherry. And I like that they care about their friends, look out for them.
7. The steamy scenes were good. Not just passable, but good. Some of them worth reading twice.
8. There was a plot, and it made sense in the context of the story. Yes, the pregnancy was a little too easy in a week (but plausible), and yes a virgin courtesan is far fetched, but, okay. No more ridiculous than a lot of romance novels. Yes, I predicted the ending and the whodunit part. But this is a romance, not a mystery. The fact that the author laid foundations so I knew who was behind it and what they were about is so much better than the dues ex machina I see in so many romance novels.

Cons

1 - (Spoiler alert) I never understood why the villain killed the hero’s older brother if her motivation was to be the duchess. She was already married to the heir of the dukedom. Never understood why she hires someone to kill the hero years ago, either.
2 - I did get a bit tired of some of the contrived reasons the characters couldn’t get together in the last quarter of the story. I literally rolled my eyes when the hero took up rooms in the nearby village because he worried his wife wouldn’t want him near as her due date approached. There was a bit too much of cutting off their nose to spite their face going on. I get that they were angry with each other and that it took time for them to build trust, but I would have rather seen them building this while being true to their feelings and let external issues play more of a role in keeping them apart.

All in all, one of the better romance books I’ve read in a long time. I recommend giving it a read.

Eloquent! Fast paced! Riveting! Sensual! Magnetic! Once I picked this book up...I found myself walking everywhere...reading, glued to its pages. The story is about a Duchess...a DUCHESS people! Her DUKE has abandoned her! First of all, in storyland, everyone wants to land a Duke. But this rake-of-a Duke (Nicholas Francis Seaton, the seventh Duke of Colton) marries and immediately leaves the Duchess of Colton --chaste --to cavort and test his personal wares all over the European countryside.

The Dowager Duchess hates her, and makes her life miserable. The Duchess of Colton and her aunt Theo are not welcome at any ducal properties, and the duchess' personal stipend has been virtually cut to such a level that she cannot hope to pay her bills. She is almost living in poverty, but for the sale of her family's jewels and her clothing. She gets desperate and makes a life altering decision. The Duchess of Colton sells all of her jewels, takes lessons in seduction from the most experienced courtesan she can find, tracks down her stray husband and sets him up for seduction. The man abandoned her without looking back eight years ago. Mrs. Juliet Leighton is born...the wittiest, most sought after famous courtesan in London. Her sights are set on her Nicholas Seaton. She plans to seduce him, get herself with an heir, and leave him...hoping that this plan helps her avoid debtors prison. Springing her trap was almost too easy.

She took a sip, surprised at the sweet flavor. “It’s nice,” she said, tipping the glass for another swallow.
Though his posture was relaxed, she could sense Nick’s anticipation in the clenching of his jaw, the straight set of his shoulders. He was a big jungle cat, patiently waiting to pounce on her. The thought was both terrifying and thrilling…

The Duke of Colton is totally unprepared for the soul rocking experience the lovely Mrs. Juliet Leighton brings to his life. Julia never considers that this plan of hers could backfire and require a hastily decided plan B - all because of the small detail she forgot to include in the planning...her heart!

This book has an excellent story, great detail, and wonderful conflict -- a real page-turner! I promise that you will be entertained. I see that Joanna Shupe has written several books since this debut book appeared just over one year ago! They are all on my TBR list...and after reading this one...I am anxious to read them all. However, I love all of the characters in this book and hope that she will consider continuing her regency story line with these wonderful characters...it seems like there is still so much to do! And I love reading Regency... Shupe style! Five stars for this one...definitely.

hated. Hated. HATED the hero.

Sigh. I really liked my first Joanna Shupe book and hoped to like this one, but I just can't.
I hated, and I mean all-capital-letters HATED the hero.
He was a sex-obsessed, self-obsessed pinhead with few redeeming qualities. He alternates between idolizing the heroine as a pure/Madonna figure and shaming her for liking/performing certain sex acts. He was tiresome and utterly lacked any appeal for me.

Shupe's writing, as usual, was very good. The problem here was not the ability to tell a story, it was flawed from the start with this terrible hero. I'm going to try another Shupe book to wipe the memory of this one from my brain!

Great for off the beaten path sights

This book has great itineraries, word of caution, read carefully the recommended duration of each drive. In my eagerness to see France and all it's wonders I under-estimated time allotments. It all worked out though once I realized it's my trip and I can go where I want to. We would pick portions of the itineraries, middle to the end or somewhere part way. Not too many recommendations for accommodations, but there was one that saved us one night when we were in a small village and our other guide book didn't have any listing at all. It was a great old farmhouse with a wonderful hostess and great breakfast the next morning and very reasonably priced.
Also found some other sites that were not mentioned in other guide books that were well worth seeing. This would be good if you were going to focus in one area too. Photos were great. A handy companion to the other materials we used on our trip.

It's okay, but there may be a better option.

About 10 years ago, I got a Back Roads Germany book from the same publisher that helped me plan an independent trip through the German wine country. It helped me map out a route that was, indeed, off the beaten path -- places that few other guidebooks mentioned. I found some of the advice a little hard to follow, the type size very small (especially for reading in the car), and some of the getting-there instructions a little too vague (we never DID find that one winery...). But it filled a niche so well that in planning a similar trip to France, I went to the library for a copy of Back Roads France.

And... I was reminded of both the strengths and weaknesses of the Germany book.

On the plus side: You get a solid idea of where-to-go and what-to-see. The book has 24 very specific itineraries, all meant to do by car over 3-7 days, with suggestions for when to go, regional highlights, and day trip options to extend your stay. Most cover a few hundred miles. (Obviously you can do a subset of a route, or zoom through it faster simply by skipping a stop that doesn't interest you.) An accompanying map makes the driving route fairly clear, and you are taken from one spot to another with solid driving directions ("Head back to the D905 and turn right to pass through Montbard and then left onto the D956 to Noyers"). Photos encourage you to stop in these many beautiful places. I discovered, for instance, that there is an Alsace Wine Route (perfect!); a two-page map and itinerary helped me learn a bit about it, enough to go digging on the Web to learn more.

Each destination gets two or three paragraphs... and that's where the weaknesses of the book begin to show. If I've driven 30 miles out of my way to visit someplace, I often want a little more information. Not just what it is and why it's worth the time (though the book does do a good, summarized job at that) but some sense of the time I might want to budget. I'm sure that you, like me, have been in the position of figuring that I'd spend 2 hours in a museum and realizing I could spend all day in this place... or the opposite. Each region does have recommendations for food and hotels, but given that a single itinerary is only, say, 6 pages long, the list is relatively small.

The book might still be "good enough"... except that I just discovered an alternative in the same niche that addresses all these weaknesses. Frommer's France Day by Day is 700 pages (rather than 250) and like this book has dedicated itineraries that help you plan the best way to cover a region. After doing a side-by-side comparison, I'm bringing Back Roads France back to the library, and keeping the newer book.

I enjoyed - but...... Review contains spoilers

I enjoy this author. My one complaint would be that there is very little angst here. It seems a little bit odd to me that Sophie was just able to disappear for a year when the club seems connected enough to find out everything about her father. And there was very little drama about Axel finding out about Mad. This couple was just too easy. I think Ms. O'Brien is very talented and I have no issues with her writing voice. I just want a little more punch to the gut sometimes. Makes the HEA that much sweeter. But I would certainly recommend.

I'm extremely surprised at all the good reviews this book got. I managed to finish this book, but it was really out of curiosity as to how bad it could get. If you want to roll your eyes, then this could be the book for you.The storyline was weak and entrench with unrealistic characters however; had great potential. Then slogs and drags out unimportant details. I have read many MC novel and this one did not fit the description because it need more action.

NOT BAD

This being the third book in The Ride Series, I was expecting the ante to be upped in the dramatic conflict department. This didn't happen. Is Axel hot, yes, is he alpha, yes, but does the book need more than this? The answer is YES!! Sophie's dad is the bad guy that never makes an appearance. He needed to have some face to face time with Sophie so that his threats and kidnapping could have created more tension, something to reflect how evil he really was. The two idiots who kidnapped Sophie were laughable. Ms. O'Brien needs to learn how to create more realistic drama, this is a MC club and Axel is supposed to be the muscle. Another point, Cal is the President of the Knights. He is the most silent Prez of an MC I have ever read! You would have thought that Axel was the President in this story. Cole, who is supposed to be the Vice President, was, also, too silent in this story. The members were always in the office talking about the situation whatever it was at the time, but Cal was never at the table conducting "church" like in other MC books. The romance between Sophie and Axel is written well, but the rest of the "action" is relatively weak. I have read all the books in this series so far and I have to say that this thin drama/conflict problem exists in all the books. I'm still looking forward to reading the next book in the series, but I'm hoping for stronger conflict and more dynamic resolution in the future stories. The pregnancy theme is also a little overdone. The sex scenes were ok but not as hot as some I've read in this same genre. Overall, I think the heat needs to be turned up in this series and we need to see how the guys make their money, legally or illegally! I swear in this book none of the guys actually went to work, neither did the old ladies! I remember reading Cole and he ran some kind of garage or something, but no mention was made of the guys actually "at work" in this book. A little more reality is needed.

This book covers the field in a comprehensive and most knowledgeable manner.

When I saw my old 1960's Moto Rumi Junior in this book, I knew I had to have it, and I must say, I have savored every single page.

Esstential Reading For Any Motorcycle Enthusiast

Mick Walker's "Italian Racing Motorcycles" is one of a series of books that covers the evolution of the road racing motorcycle by the nation of which the machine originates from. As the title indicates, this book discusses the motorcycles of Italy.

What I enjoy most about this series of books is the format. I find them easy to read, and a valuable resource to add to my library due to the abundance of information that Mick has compiled on a multitude of manufacturers. From Aermacchi to Rumi, everything you could ever wish to know about Italian road racing motorcycles is covered. While the Ducati section is large due to that marque's racing history, Mick does an incredible job at showcasing some of the manufacturers that exploded onto the road racing scene with much promise, only to be cast aside for one reason or another as time went by. The racing efforts of manufacturers such as Morbidelli, Bianchi, and Paton are covered in-depth. Mick does a fantastic job at not only talking about the machines, but also of talking about the riders, the engineers, and the mechanics that all helped to achieve some of the most incredible goals that anyone could dream of in the realm of motorcycle road racing. The pictures that Mick provides to accompany his writing are spectacular as well.

I also own a copy of Mick's "European Racing Motorcycles", and I am setting my sights on more of his work. You cannot go wrong with any book in this series. These books can be hard to get, but once you have your hands on a copy, you'll never let it go. I highly recommend this title to any motorcycle and road racing enthusiast.

How I stumbled upon Brooke Page and Conklin's Trilogy is beyond me at this point but I am so glad that I did. I really loved her writing style and that she was telling a story that was different from anything I had been reading. In a book world that is full of billionaires and virgin's we get a woman fighting to get back on track and a sexy architect. The journey that Becca and Tyler embark upon is full of twists, turns and moments that left me thinking 'what just happened?'

The trilogy follows the story of Becca and Tyler. Tyler is Becca's boss at her new job after she returns to her home of Grand Rapids from living it up in Florida. They're both attracted to one another but Becca is very insecure. She battled with being overweight and bullied for it for most of her life. By her mother no less. That woman is something else that I'm not even going to get started on. Tyler wants her with an intensity that he can't deny but he isn't willing to put a relationship with her for the world to know about. Becca is alright with that until she isn't. She sees the softer side of Ty that he doesn't show everyone else and she knows she wants more. Little by little she breaks out of her shell and starts demanding the things she wants and needs, respect at the top of that list.

Tyler is enamored with Becca's shy self confidence and the way she starts to face her fears head on. The only problem is, Tyler has secrets of his own that he isn't willing to share. Mainly because he doesn't have answers to all the questions they will cause and he doesn't want to put her into danger. Because danger is lurking in more than one corner. I really loved the way the intensity built throughout the entire series with a sweet love shining through all the ups and downs.

There is a lot going on in the final book, that being said, everything tied together very nicely in the end. The trials and tribulations that Tyler and Becca suffer through in this book only solidifies their relationship. Becca's willingness to not only fight for herself but for Tyler showed just how far she had come. No more was she the wallflower that would let everyone walk all over her. I thought Ty was letting his guard down but he was broody and closed off as ever. As more secrets from the past are revealed, Tyler is left questioning all that he has known for most of his life. After a very shocking moment that had my jaw on the floor, he retreats even further into himself. It takes a good portion of the book to sort out that mess and just when I thought Tyler and Becca would sail off into their happily ever after...BAM!!! Another unexpected twist in the plot. Holy smokes I wasn't expecting that from this story at all. But it did make sense in the grand scheme of things (sorry no spoilers from me, just know that you've been warned to hang onto your hair).

Overall, this series gave me everything I wanted and then some. Tyler and Becca took me on quite the journey from the start of their relationship right through to the end of book three. Their connection, passion and understanding of each other is the romance that most can only dream, or read, about. It just goes to show how loving yourself and having the love of the right person makes you into the best version of yourself. If you like your books full of drama, angst, steam and some suspense then this is the series for you- I promise you won't be disappointed.

Brooke has done it again!!!
She just gets better and better
this is book two in the Conklin's Triolgy Series and cannot be read as a stand alone.
Get on over to book one and read that one first!!!

This is the first book that I have read from this Author.
I gave this book 5 stars.

This is Becca and Tyler's story.

Becca is a beautiful young lady, who has basically been put down her whole life from her family to her friends. She thinks she is fat, and ugly and not worthy of being with anyone. Her mom is always telling her how she needs to eat less, and how she will never be a size 2 but she needs to be better. Now Becca is only a size 8 to start with and once she decides to cut out all potatoes and junk food and basically anything that is not a vegetable or meat she goes down to a size 4, but she is still feeling like she is ugly and is way more comfortable in a six. Now you may say really? A size 8? I would kill to be a size 8, but society has made it so that we are not comfortable in our own skin, this was a big issue for the writer to write about, so many times we get caught up in what we think others should think, and we are never happy with ourselves.

Becca has a boyfriend named Connor who she has been dating for quite awhile, that is until she finds him in her bed with her best friend Ashlynn. Ashlynn always wants everything that Becca has, and she didn't stop at the boyfriend either. She continues through out the book trying to trump Becca every chance she gets. Becca is a very passive, timid woman, and to a point that is good, but I think she is this way because everyone is always saying something about her weight, Ashlynn is always pointing it out right along with her mom, you shouldn't eat that, or it's ok that your not a size 2.

Becca broke my heart, she so wants to just be loved, for who she is, that she doesn't even love herself. She is constantly trying to make herself better, She needs to learn to love herself, or she is never going to ever be happy.

She graduates from college and moves in with her other bestfriend Jamie and she decides she is just going to have fun and sleeps around with a whole bunch of guys they meet at bars. She finally lands a job back home and moves back. She has a beautiful condo that her parents set up for her, and she is not happy with the fact that she is home and under their thumb once again, she wants to be able to do this on her own. But again Becca is timid and doesn't like to cause waves so she stays quiet.

At her new job she meets Tyler and he is the bosses son, he runs the company with his dad and two brothers, now Tyler has his own issues and those issues cause him to want to keep her a secret, and not because of the way she thinks, she thinks it's because she is not perfect and that she is no way good enough for him, but they have to learn to deal with these things together, and both of them are very hard to get to open up, so while she thinks she is not good enough, and that she is fat and frumpy. Tyler is not like that, he loves the way she looks, and doesn't have issues with any of that.

The book continues to deal with Tyler and Becca's relationship and their issues, but is this going to tear them apart? Someone with all the issues that Becca has can she put up with being a secret and if she does for how long?

This book really spoke to me, maybe because I related to it so well, I found Becca to be a beautiful woman with some major issues, I do believe that Tyler can help her face some of her fears, and that he will help bring out that feistyness that she is missing. AND it is there. She just has to be willing to let it out.

Tyler when he finally told his story my heart broke too, these are two beautiful, damaged souls looking for someone to just love them. And I do believe they have found that in each other.

I loved going on this journey with them, and their story is not over, but their was not a major cliff hanger, which I loved also, it left me wanting more, but I was also satisfied.

Thank you Brooke for a beautiful story, about learning to love yourself, about learning that you might not always be perfect but in someone's eyes they will see you as perfect! And isn't that what we are all looking for ?

I can't wait to read the next book!!
