There's More Leaves on the Tree is about the author's 14 year journey in search of his great grandfather's Frank Bilberry's white father and African American mother. The book starts out with a visit to his grandfather's Ladell Bilberry old home site. The visit reveal that the old home site was now overtaken by the forest where it can barely be found any longer. The home he knew as a child has now fallen down with a few remnants left from the past. It was a place where his ancestral family and extended families once bought land raised and sold crops to make the best living they could. He reminiscences about how his mother and father once lived in this area. His mother really didn't like living on a farm and designed a way to convince her husband to move closer to the town of Marion, Louisiana.

The author writes a chapter about ""The End of Jim Crow Education"" in Union Parish, Louisiana. He recalls how the Plessey vs Ferguson doctrine of 1896 and the Brown vs Education doctrine of 1954 co-existed at the same time. One law allowed African Americans to have separate but equal facilities as Whites but in 1954 the Brown vs Board of Education stated it was acceptable to go to the same schools. The book delineates the struggle his high school, the community and the Union Parish School Board had in trying to reconcile this dilemma when it was time for the senior class to graduate in 1970.

The Bilberry surname originated from White immigrants from Alabama who made their way to the rich fertile land of Union Parish, Louisiana. Most of them bought land, raised and sold crops to make their living. Many owned slaves. Slaves were valuable property to the slave owners. Many mulatto children were fathered by slave owners with the slave female. It was not uncommon for this to continue after the emancipation of the slaves. The latter is the case with Frank Bilberry. He was born circa 1878 to a former slave holder that lived near his mother's family. His white father sired several other sister and brothers other slave and former wome. Like many other slaves of South several slaves used the surname Bilberry after their master's name after being emancipated.

The book is filled with pictures that follows along with the story of the book. It has an extensive appendix at the end of the book that includes death certificates, marriage licenses, land patents, obituaries and photographs of both white and black Bilberry's and their extended families (Honeycutts, Horn, Nelson, Bridges, Feazel, Wilhite, Warren, Burch, Ellis, Archie, Armstrong, Roberts, Robinson, Montgomery and more) of Union Parish, Louisiana. Every Family has a family story to tell but someone must be willing to tell it.

Charles is a retired Engineering Inspection Supervisor. He was raised up in Marion, Louisiana but has resided in Las Vegas, Nevada since 1970. His educational background includes an Associate of Science degree in Drafting Technology from the College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas; a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas; a Bachelor of Arts degree in General Ministry from Bethany University in Scotts Valley, California; a Master of Arts degree in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Louisiana Baptist Theological Seminary. He was an adjunct professor at Bethany University in Las Vegas, Nevada and became interested in writing his family's history while teaching church history classes and after attending several family reunions. He enjoys fishing, hiking, writing and traveling with his wife Taryn.

Black family history being told.

This is also part of my family. I loved that I was able to fill in the blanks on my family trees. he is years ahead of me but I will get there. The Roberts/Jackson families have stories to be told, also. When your parents speak of the Bilberrys in such a loving way, you get to know the family before you read the book.

About the Author
Kenneth S. Saladin is Professor of Biology at Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville, Georgia, where he has taught since 1977. Ken teaches human anatomy and physiology, introductory medical physiology, histology, animal behavior, and natural history of the Galápagos Islands. He has also previously taught introductory biology, general zoology, sociobiology, parasitology, and biomedical etymology. Ken is a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society, American Association of Anatomists, American Physiological Society, Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology, and American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is the author of the best-selling textbooks Anatomy & Physiology: The Unity of Form and Function and Human Anatomy. Ken and his wife Diane have two adult children.

This is a pretty decent A & P book

This is a pretty decent A & P book. I used Tortora 10th edition when in school, but later as a tutor/TA, used Saladin 4th edition. I thought the Tortora and Saladin books were really similar, but I like the graphics better in Saladin. When I was a tutor my students were using the 4th edition, but I had the 3rd edition available in our tutor lab. I only found a few pages that were different. I had sold my old A & P book, but wanted to get another one as reference. I did buy the older 3rd edition just because it was so cheap.

I ordered this textbook because I liked what I saw in the previews of the book. Once I received it I opened the book (the book is larger than I expected, which is a great thing) and I absolutely loved how detailed the book is and all the diagrams and anatomical pictures that are included. This book is great for students who need it for school and for people who want to learn on their own, like I am doing with this textbook; the textbook is so descriptive that you will not need to have somebody explain what you read in it.

the loose leaf is awesomally convenient

While everyone else brought these 1000 page textbooks to class, i just brought in the chapter that I needed. On behalf of my shoulder, i thank whoever came up with this idea!!! As for content, the book is very interesting, the material is explained in great depth and very well. I had almost zero biology knowledge and was able to understand the concepts from first read. From my experience with other textbooks, sometimes, it takes 4-5 reads of the same page to get what the heck is being said. But this was not the case with this particular book. In addition, in the begining of every chapter, theres a side note on what concepts you should go over because they might come up. This was useful second semester because after a break from first semester of this class, it was nice to have specific concepts brought to your attention when needed.

Beyond the MBA Hype

As someone who is not looking to do an MBA, and therefore does not fall within the intended audience, this book was a great read. Sameer, the author, has made an attempt to cater specifically to the needs of prospective MBA applicants from India.

A few great points about this book are:
1. Sameer has a distinctive lucid and free-flowing style of writing that causes the reader to feel as if he is sitting right across the table, having a conversation. Difficult topics such as "career change", "skills gap" and "networking" have been simplified to a level that everyone would be able to comprehend.
2. It offers a holistic view of the entire MBA experience - from pre-MBA insecurities ("Do I really need an MBA?") to post-MBA recruitment.
3. A thought ringing through the entire book, which the author drives the reader to delve deeper into, is to (re)evaluate whether an MBA would be a step in the right direction - something that most books written along similar lines don't do well. This is one of the great strengths of this book.
4. The story of two fictional characters - Sachin and Mitu - representing the two extreme ends of the Indian social spectrum, serves as an outline to which all topics in the book are aligned. Readers would be able to immediately relate and connect with either of the two, which gives a human feel to an otherwise seemingly dry collection of topics.
5. The book is peppered with witty and humorous comments that make it a pleasant read.
6. The length - 172 pages - makes it ideal to be finished in a couple of sittings.

A few areas in which the book is a little lacking:
1. A lot of Indian (Hindi) words have been used all through. Though it is geared mainly towards Indian applicants, for those of us that might not be familiar with such terms, a short appendix with explanations would have been helpful.
2. Except for in the Appendices, the author has not shared any personal stories all through the book. This was probably to ensure non-biasedness of thoughts. However, sharing some personal stories (for example, on "career change", which the author successfully made) would have made it more interesting.
3. A large number of topics are covered - probably too many for 172 pages. Therefore, every topic is no more than a summary. This being by design, though it provides an overview of a number of topics, leaves it a little thin on details. Maybe the author intends to take up some of these topics in greater detail in his next book(s).
4. Links in footnotes could have been edited and made shorter. Some have browsing history embedded in them.

All in all, this is a great book that is highly recommended for every MBA aspirant from India.

While it would be a great read for anyone sitting on the fence regarding the decision to go in for an MBA, it is certainly not an overstatement to say that every aspiring applicant should include this book as a part of his or her preparation. An MBA is an investment in yourself - and a rather expensive one. With a significant amount of resources that a candidate commits to over a period of 1-2 years, it is only common sense to understand what to expect going in. I am completing my MBA from Columbia Business School and would definitely recommend that incorporating insights from this book into the MBA application is advisable to come across as an informed applicant.
There are more than a few dozen books flooding the MBA application market, but this one stands out for Kamat's witty narrative, breadth and depth of content and an ability to connect with and address just about any question that an MBA applicant has on their mind but gets answers to only after setting foot on campus - which can be a costly proposition.

Will save you a bundle if you take the time to read

I completed an MBA from a relatively high ranked business school 10 years ago and all I can say is that my life would certainly have been easier if I'd had access to a book like this at that point in time.

This book (which I received as a review copy) packs style, personality and humor with an abundant dose of useful information. Throughout the book, the author displays an easy going sense of humor. For example he makes a statement that the top talent from India that can't get into the IIMs (India's top B Schools) settles for Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, and the rest of the top programs globally. And for the earlier reviewer who said that he (she?) did not like the mix of Hindi in the book ... actually it's called Hinglish (Hindi + English) and is very well understood by most Indians. Adding an appendix of those terms would be like trying to explain a joke.

The book features real life stories which give the prospective applicant an idea of what to expect before, during and beyond the MBA. There are also fascinating facts and statistics that one can glean from reading this book. Case in point - did you know that only 19,000 Indians took the GMAT while 200,000 Indians took the CAT (the test that you write to get into Indian business schools)?

This book will help you avoid mismatched expectations and navigate through the maze of consultants, MBA coaching programs, admission essays and standardized testing. It could save you a bundle of money by helping you to select the right school and focus your efforts in the right direction.

The book also gives you a head start over your peers by giving you a preview of MBA courses, how MBA class teams really work, what they teach and what they can't teach (common sense, practicality, creativity and foresight.) You get a glimpse of how networking really works and how to land an internship.

For me the best part of the book is where the author describes a day in his life when he was an MBA student at Cambridge. It made me wish for my student days all over again!

A must read if you are an Indian b-school aspirant.

Sixteen year old Sally Anders seems to have a normal life. She sings in the church choir, babysits and has the occasional arguments whith her younger brother. However, when she doesn't return from babysitting one night, a search is conducted and her body is found. She had been raped and murdered by the home of the family for which she was babysitting.

The story is told in brief sequences of people's thoughts and reactions to Sally's murder.

In gives a picture of life in a small New England town which has a ficticious name but is actually Guilford, Connecticut where the author lived and served elected office.

We are given a step by step account of people's activities around the time of the murder. This approach doesn't give the reader any insight into Sally's thoughts and there is never an emotional sympathy for the character. It is as if the reader was viewing the information in a newspaper.

The book was written in 1989 and that was the year that Hillary Waugh was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writer's of America.

Agatha Christie said of her book ABSENT IN THE SPRING (a non-mystery published under a pseudonym) "It was a book I HAD to write." I suspect Hillary Waugh felt the same about this book, even though he knew it would be a disappointment to some of his fans. This is no tightly-written police procedural showing the shrewd, tenacious police chief and his men slowly and remorselessly closing in on a killer. This book was written to spotlight a phenomenon that Waugh had observed over decades - the fact that any serious crime (particularly a murder) sets off shock waves that affect far more than the victim and the victim's family.

The small town of Crockford, Connecticut seems caught in a time warp. Although it's 1968, the lovely town green with a church on three of the four corners could be a scene from colonial times. It's a town where doors are left unlocked and no one worries about children going places unaccompanied. Where Yale professors buy homes for the small town atmosphere and the easy drive to New Haven. Where there's no child abuse, no illegal drugs, and no racism. Where the men are prosperous professionals and their wives are, well, wives.

But the brutal rape and murder of a quiet, well-behaved teen-aged girl starts the shock waves. A drifter catches a lucky break and suddenly friends and neighbors are wondering how much they really know about each other. Like fellow New Englander Shirley Jackson, Waugh knew the panic and savagery that lie just below the surface of civilization. And once events are set in motion, the results are horrific and lives are destroyed.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as I have Waugh's others, but it's a well-written and thought provoking book. I think he accomplished what he set out to do and no writer can ask for more than that. It's worth digging up a copy and reading it.

About the Author
Staffan Bjork has a Ph.D. in Informatics from Goteborg University, Sweden. He has been the studio manager of the Play studio at the Interactive Institute in Sweden between 2001 and 2003 and currently works part time as senior researcher at Play and part time at Chalmers University of Technology. He has authored many articles about game development. Jussi Holopainen is a Research Scientist at Nokia Research Center, Tampere, Finland. He is one of the founding members and the current (2003) treasurer of Digital Games Research Association (http://www digra.org). He is also a member of the steering board of Neogames, a Finnish game development and promotion organization.

Don't be mislead by the name

Don't be mislead by the name of this book, it is not "Design Patterns in Games" it is "Patterns in Game Design." Many of the people below have misread the title and have bought it before doing their research.

This is a book on game design, on a method of formal analysis that needs more attention in the game design world. Some people are afraid that if we list all game elements to pick and choose from, we'd end up with stale mass produced games. This is NOT true, please don't be mislead by this thought. Not only does that thought not prevent stale badly made mass produced games to begin with, but like many other structured artistic works (TV, Literature, and the like) games can benefit from a defined lexicon of elements (Patterns in this book). Recognizing the things that games share in common with each other can help you to find what it is that makes a game unique.

Like literature, everything under the sun has pretty much been done already in games. While there are some elements that have yet to be discovered in games, no matter what communication between Designer and Player still requires familiar elements to encourage play and game mastery. Because of this, there will likely be no completely contrary game. A game that is completely different from all other games (I mean shares NO elements in common with any other game), is likely to be a bad one. Just like a movie that shared no elements in common with all other movies would likely be unsuccessful.

Simply because these elements exist and are strictly defined does not require you to follow them strictly, the point is to use the pattern as a starting point to adapt, combine and create using the components given to you, much like programming you can use these abstract tools to create things of great complexity. The elements in the book are described thoroughly and give links to other elements that are related as well as problems and rewards that may arise with using the element. This is essential to understanding that design choices in gaming usually have inherent positives and drawbacks.

In conclusion, this book provides an excellent resource to the abstract art that is Game Design [...]. As someone who has used this method to analyze a particularly difficult to categorize game, I found the experience very rewarding, because I better understood the effect that each pattern gave to the game as a whole. There is one negative however, this book is a little old and new elements need to be added, but it can't go anywhere if the only reviews on it represent a mistake in purchase.

PS. My Game Design teacher at Digipen recommended that a good exercise for Game Designers would be to pick element patterns at random and try to make a good game out of that (remember you can adapt the patterns, they are only a start).

An Important Reference

This book collects and classifies (arguably) all the commonly-found design elements of games, providing a very useful reference for game designers. For designers interested in in-depth analysis of games and gameplay mechanics, this book provides a reference by which game design elements can be systematically identified.

I have found this useful not only for analysis, but more importantly in serving as a framework for gameplay derivation especially when translating gameplay dynamics from traditional games, play, and popular interactions into the modern mediums of computers, the internet, and online social networks.

This approach was used, for example, in the MILLEE project by CMU professor Matthew Kam, where native traditional games were analyzed using the patterns in this book to help derive language-learning games that were more accessible and attractive to children from impoverished areas of the developing world.

Depending on how you use it, this book can be truly invaluable.

Great reference, not at all about programming

This is a great reference book as long as you know what you are getting. As others have noted, this book has nothing to do with programming and is as dry as an encyclopedia. I'm still glad I have it, as I can't think of another book like it.

This book is about game design, which is a separate field from programming. It is about mechanics, dilemmas, feedback loops, rewards, goals, metagames, etc. It covers how time limits change gameplay, the consequences of imperfect information, what things can lead to player alliances, and so on. It won't help you write code, but it should help you understand how the different elements of a game work together to make it fun.

This is a reference book and is written in an academic style so it is dry. I can't imagine reading it straight through. Most of the patterns are heavily cross-referenced to other patterns. In fact, many of the patterns are defined in terms of other patterns so it takes a lot of flipping back and forth to understand the meaning. Fortunately, it comes with a CDROM including all the patterns in the book, plus some extras that aren't printed in the book, in nicely hyperlinked HTML. I've spent hours clicking through the patterns, like wandering around wikipedia.

As far as I know, there isn't another book like this on the market. Books like Challenges for Game Designers and Game Design Workshop cover similar concepts, but neither of those attempt to be a complete reference like this does.
