In Obeah and Other Powers, historians and anthropologists consider how marginalized spiritual traditions—such as obeah, Vodou, and Santería—have been understood and represented across the Caribbean since the seventeenth century. In essays focused on Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, and the wider Anglophone Caribbean, the contributors explore the fields of power within which Caribbean religions have been produced, modified, appropriated, and policed. The "other powers" of the book's title have helped to shape, or attempted to curtail, Caribbean religions and healing practices. These powers include those of capital and colonialism; of states that criminalize some practices and legitimize others; of occupying armies that rewrite constitutions and reorient economies; of writers, filmmakers, and scholars who represent Caribbean practices both to those with little knowledge of the region and to those who live there; and, not least, of the millions of people in the Caribbean whose relationships with one another, as well as with capital and the state, have long been mediated and experienced through religious formations and discourses.

About the Author

Diana Paton is a Reader in Caribbean history at Newcastle University. She is the author of No Bond but the Law: Punishment, Race, and Gender in Jamaican State Formation, 1780–1870 and editor of A Narrative of Events, since the First of August, 1834, by James Williams, an Apprenticed Labourer in Jamaica and, with Pamela Scully, Gender and Slave Emancipation in the Atlantic World, all also published by Duke University Press.

Maarit Forde is a Lecturer in the Department of Liberal Arts at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine.

About the Author
Rebecca Lenkiewicz's The Night Season premiered at the National Theatre in 2004, received the Critics' Circle Most Promising Playwright Award and was nominated for the Charles Wintour Evening Standard Award and the Susan Smith Blackburn Award. Her Naked Skin premiered at the National Theatre in 2008, the first play by a living female playwright to be staged on the Olivier. The "How-To" Guide for Life - Finally!

I have read a number of leadership/self-help/motivational books for multiple reasons throughout my life, and though I have gained tidbits of insight from each, I am always left wanting more and feeling as though my reasons for reading the book were never quite satisfied. Living in Your Top 1% is different. For the first time, I was given some real direction and valid inspiration after reading a book of this type. I am surprised that nothing like this has been written before.

Most self-improvement books tend to focus on one concept, such as "setting goals" or "the power of positive thinking," but Alissa Finerman really covers all avenues in this book. She takes age-old concepts, weaves in new ideas and tips and wraps everything neatly into one package. After reading this book, I felt like I was given a fresh ground to stand on and taught the proper way to grow and move forward. She covers everything from mindset, to goal setting, to balance, and how to recover from being knocked off course. It was not a complicated read, and because of the way she illustrated the concepts with memorable true stories, all of the learning points really stuck with me in ways that I feel made them easy to implement.

What made this book most impressionable to me was the fact that it caused me to look at all areas of my life when wanting to make improvements. Alissa understands that something you do in one area of your life (such as a health and fitness goal) will undoubtedly affect all other areas (such as fun, family, work, etc...). The key is to understand that you may have to make sacrifices in one area in order to make improvements in another. We often tend to take a "crash diet" approach when making changes in our life, without thinking of the chain reactions it can cause. This book really helps you to examine your life as being made up of different working parts, and shows you how to prioritize your needs in each area at different times in your life. It genuinely helped to give me perspective and taught me to go about things in a new way, which so far has really been making a huge difference.

I have recommended this book to a number of people who have found it to be equally as helpful. The best part about the book is the wide audience that it applies to. I think it's a great learning tool for virtually anyone, whether they be looking for a career change, wanting to have more fun in life, or even looking to have a healthier lifestyle. The sky is the limit in Living in Your Top 1%. I think that virtually anyone could benefit from reading it. There is a takeaway to fit every individual...seriously!

perfect for me right now

I have been reading organizational, self-help books for years. Alissa Finerman's heart really shines in this book. I gained a lot of personal insight with this book, specifically, how to take small steps towards my goals and she directed me to write those down (not anything new, but her tone was so perfect that I easily got out my notebook!). I explored the goal, to lose 8 more pounds; clarifying why I want it and declaring its importance. I want to feel fabulous (I have 8 children, 7 of them have come from this body), I want my husband to be physically turned on by my small waist and curves, I want to inspire others. The next part was the best part; I had to write down the obstacles THEN plan ways to overcome. Small steps: exercise four times per week, eat green and clean, use the mantra "every bite counts." Challenges: old habits of grazing without thought and just drifting. Ways to overcome: reframe my old thoughts: yes, I have children and they are the reason I am getting into tip top shape (vs using them as the excuse), put up pictures of athletes, write down food intake (and ask a friend to look it over weekly), get rid of the junk food in the house and commit to making the time each morning to allow the goal and ideal to come into my brain, heart, soul, awareness. Recommit each day. Finally, look for small wins and establish a target date AND for me, continue to set the date six months out that I maintain the weight to enable this to be a life-long deal!
I did the same process for my other goal of growing my nutrition business.
This book was worth the ten bucks. I highly recommend. Thanks, Alissa, for following your dreams and helping me recommit to mine!

A real formula for self-transformation

Alissa Finerman wastes no time in this instructional self-improvement book. Upfront she dedicates it to "Every person who has overcome or will soon overcome the word impossible" - this concise but powerful intro sets the tone for what is to come: a series of 1st hand and 2nd hand stories of triumph over some of life's difficulties (especially the difficulties we erect for ourselves), combined with a near recipe like set of principles and instructions (presented as 9 'rituals') on how you can move from where you really are in life to where you really want to be.

Unlike many tomes from self-help Authors, Finerman's book does not take a long and winding road toward instruction. The book is organized as a set of true stories of transformation: Each person's story is concise, simple, and direct. Finerman's mixture of famous and ordinary people in these stories makes for engaging and interesting reading. A common thread of self-realization, mindset change and corrective action (or in Finerman's formula: Assess, Create, Implement) weaves each tale together to form a narrative of the book's theme: Successful self-change is possible for anyone willing to follow a proven plan.

A stirring, motivational quote from a bevy of famous achievers (from Aristotle to Anthony Robbins) establishes credibility for, then launches each new chapter while you as the reader begin to envision your own 'success story' unfolding vicariously through a combination of the tales of others' triumphs over doubt, debilitation or circumstance.

Finerman underscores her intent to help you drive toward results by integrating academic textbook like assignments, recaps and note-taking sections at the end of each chapter. This is what the book tangibly delivers: A real formula for self-transformation. For me, the textbook like instructions at the end of each chapter were a bit distracting--I prefer to read without interruption, digest the totality of a book, then review. But the point of this book is not to make you ponder or to merely be inspired-- the point of the book is to instruct and guide you through a thoughtfully developed regimen where the eventual outcome is the realization of your dreams. With that outcome in mind, Finerman's academic like instructional approach is tough to argue against.

Like any effective self-improvement process, Finerman's "9 rituals" aren't easy to complete-- nor is her process a quick one. But as any successful person can attest to, her 9 prescribed rituals absolutely do work. This book is written clearly and offers basic (yet powerful) evidence based instruction on how you can win in the game of life-- and be happy along your path to victory.

My favorite thing about LIVING IN YOUR TOP 1% is that for me it serves as a reliable 'pick me up' whenever I run into the inevitable obstacles along the path toward my realizing my own dreams and I need a healthy recharge of self-confidence. In this sense, the book is a wonderful motivator as it reliably restores my confidence and dutifully guides me back on the path toward achieving my ultimate life goals.

Super list of Legitimate Companies

This is a great book for any Mystery Shopper. If you are just starting off you will have an abundance of useful information right at your fingertips.
For those seasoned shoppers, there is something in the book for you too. A huge list of legitimate Mystery Shopping Companies for you to apply for. The list alone is worth the price of the book.
The book is well written and will fully explain all facets of Mystery Shopping.

Great Resource for The New Mystery Shopper

This book is terrific for someone starting out in the field of Mystery Shopping. It has the practical advice needed to begin this career. I have been Mystery Shopping for over 8 years and I was able to learn some new tips. The list of reputable mystery shop companies is worth the price of the book alone. I strongly recommend this book for anyone wishing to become a mystery shopper.

The Thinking Person's Guide to Mystery Shopping

I started Mystery Shopping in the mid-1970s. If you gave me a time machine, I would go back and hand myself a copy of this book! Sure, some parts would be science fiction back then, but ninety-five percent are lessons and strategies it took me years to locate and arrange in my Mystery Shopping tool bag.

In this guide, PaminCa has provided the blueprint for a successful foundation in the oft-maligned career of Mystery Shopping. The author regards the reader as an intelligent individual seeking the tools and skills required for this complex and fascinating avocation. The author does not aggrandize the joys of Mystery Shopping, nor does she minimize the work needed to accomplish each assignment to the high standards of the industry. Instead, she lays out what needs to be done, how to do it, and why. The "why" is what anchors the techniques in your mind and allows you to expand upon the examples.

An excellent example of the thought that went into this guide is the order in which the author introduces concepts. After touching on the basic tools one should have, you next come to a chapter titled "Getting Organized." This chapter guides you though all of the questions that should be answered BEFORE you apply to your first Mystery Shopping Company in search of shops. Most of us applied to a few companies, accepted a number of shops, completed them in one form or another, then said, "What have I gotten myself into?" PaminCa's method is much, much better!

The author's chapter "Planning my Month" gives Mystery Shopping specific tips on how to organize your work and keep on top of the paperwork. You may end up using different tools or methodologies for your workflow, but you will incorporate all of the elements PaminCa discusses in some form or another.

The chapter titled "Questions and Answers" provides all of the details of the day-to-day world of Mystery Shopping; from finding jobs and getting assigned the jobs, to reporting the job and getting paid. Just in this chapter alone are lots of things someone on their own would have spend hours digging for or just be forced to guess about.

Both newbies and experienced shoppers will find a gold mine in the chapter labeled "Narratives and Word Documents." For those just beginning their Mystery Shopping career, this chapter will make your life, and lives of the editors who must read your narratives, much easier. The sample narratives, and lists of positive and negative words, will be important resources as you strive to accurately describe what you witnessed on your shop. The old hand will encounter phrases or words to add to their repertoire.

You get to look behind the curtain in "Company Notes to Shoppers." Four of the more well-known Mystery Shopping companies are examined in detail. Though the company spokesperson and PaminCa's words, you gain a better understanding of how your customer (the Mystery Shopping Company) views what you do and what they need. This was a surprising and welcomed chapter.

The Bottom Line: This guide saves the new shopper days and days of time. As we have all found in our daily lives, time is the most valuable commodity--no more so than in Mystery Shopping. The experienced shopper will find at least one--likely many more--fresh perspectives on the process of Mystery Shopping that will hone their work product.

Oh, one last tip, read this guide before you venture into the online forums PaminCa mentions in the guide. You will be prepared with the background you require to gain the most from the valuable discussions you will encounter on that supportive Website.
