About the Author
For more than 30 years, Stuart McRobert has revealed how to achieve bodybuilding and strength training success. He has done this through his books, about 700 articles in newsstand muscle magazines, and 15 years as the editor of HARDGAINER, a bodybuilding magazine.
This blue-ribbon author is one of the most respected writers in the genre of weight training. Although Stuart has been extensively published in the mainstream bodybuilding world, his guidance is most definitely not mainstream. Conventional training methods don't work well for most trainees.
McRobert is not an armchair coach. Without drugs, and with just normal genetics, he built 45 pounds of muscle, transformed his physique, and deadlifted 400 pounds for a set of 20 reps. He still practices what he teaches, and as he approaches age 60 he continues to be strong, lean, flexible, and fit.
Stuart has a degree in education, over 40 years experience of training himself, over 30 years experience of guiding others, and is the author of five books on physique transformation: BRAWN, BEYOND BRAWN, THE INSIDER’S TELL-ALL HANDBOOK ON WEIGHT-TRAINING TECHNIQUE, BUILD MUSCLE LOSE FAT LOOK GREAT, and the first book of the NEW BRAWN SERIES: HOW TO BUILD UP TO 50 POUNDS OF MUSCLE THE NATURAL WAY.
Chuck Miller has trained with weights for over 30 years, and competed in strength sports for over 20 years, always drug-free. He has won multiple regional and national powerlifting championships, and totaled Raw Elite three times—twice in the 198-pound class and, most recently, at 220.
Chuck made these achievements despite two major challenges: He is a type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetic, and he overcame a tibial plateau fracture in his left knee at age 38 that required a plate and five screws to correct.
Chuck has trained elite athletes, military special forces personnel, and average Joes and Jills. He has also written dozens of articles for respected strength-training journals.
In addition to his ample in-the-trenches experience, Chuck is committed to lifelong learning. He has maintained the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) credential since passing the rigorous exam in 1997. He attended West Virginia University for his post-secondary education, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism in 1991, a JD in 1994, and an MBA in 1995. He passed the West Virginia bar exam and is licensed to practice law, although his career is in management and his passion is strength.

HARD work - works!!!
By drums1959
Fan's of Stuart McRobert and his magazine Hardgainer will love this book. This book covers a lot of ground. Especially useful for
less experienced trainees. Good stuff in here for the more advanced trainer as well - particularly the chapters Chuck Miller dedicated to
his powerlifting training career. A great book on ALL the specifics of HARD training, how to set up a program, how to keep getting gains
from a program. These programs on paper may not look that difficult to many because of the limited number of sets. Try running thru these
programs for awhile where the emphasis is on barbells/dumbells - NO MACHINES, exercises which hit the core and multiple muscles per
lift, therefore calling for HEAVY weights no matter the rep range worked. RESULTS can be yours following the advice in this book.

A Top Read by An Expert on Effective, Brief, Safe Training
By Richard Winett
Walk into any gym or health club around the world, and no matter the years of training, gender, or age of the people you see training, they all can greatly benefit from Stuart McRobert's latest work. Presented in an extended interview format, the book covers every aspect of training and nutrition. There are many points from McRobert's excellent prior books and the 15 years of his Hard Gainer magazine. But, there also are new and timely insights. Basically, this book provides an important wake up call to, literally, people around the world. We can be more effective in our training by training less often and with many fewer sets, training harder, and training more safely, and carefully attending to nutrition and recovery. It is difficult to discern what one's true potential is unless you are training effectively and this book provides the details about how to do just that in a very accessible format. In addition, McRobert provides some personal disclosures that will make all of us consider the role that exercise plays in our life.

Get ready to take your mass, power, and training knowledge to a new level!
By Nathan G. Harvey
It's impossible for me to write a review that would truly sum up the genius of this book, the staggering training wisdom that it contains, or the nostalgia that reading it set off inside of me.
I just wish that I would have known it's contents, and that of Stuart's other books and publications, back when I was a young teen trying to figure out how I was going to fit Bill Pearl's giant workouts into my life. I wanted so badly to be a football star, but that's hard to do when you barely tip the scales at 130 lbs. The HIT recommendations of Darden and Jones helped some, but after some initial gains, I stagnated with workouts that were too long, despite pushing myself to absolute failure on every set. I felt guilty after every workout, convinced that if I had really worked hard enough I wouldn't be stuck at the same size and strength levels. Much of my weight and strength gain was probably due to normal growth, and although good speed and strength for my size helped me to be fairly successful as a high school athlete, I peaked at a top bodyweight of 170 lbs, and my dreams of stardom never came true.
It wasn't until my mid twenties that I came across Stuart's books and Hardgainer magazine, and it was both a complete revelation and the beginning of a wonderful period of my life. I discovered workouts that actually fit into my life, led to clockwork gains without the guilt of wondering if I had tried hard enough, and didn't require me to endure pain that made every workout a miserable affair. Within two years I tipped the scales at more than 230 lbs. and had pushed my strength far beyond my earlier levels. I met friends and mentors on the forum, wrote articles for the magazine, and enjoyed the heck out of the whole process. Chuck's interview of Stuart reminds me of much that happened back then. I just wish that it all took place when I was still playing competitive sports.
I think that Chuck and Marty's input about powerlifting, and elite athletes, are a wonderful complement to Stuart's discussion of what works for drug-free, genetically typical trainees. We usually read that there are no secrets in training, but I think that their combined efforts actually served as an expose' of sorts, showing that many elite lifters have reached their staggering success through training programs so intentionally brief that it's hard to believe. If you have avoided McRobert's teachings in the past because you didn't want to associate with 98 lb. weaklings who do nothing but whine about their fragile bone structures, Chuck and Marty's input will show you that you have nothing to fear, and much to gain.
To sum up, I think that this is a great book for anyone who is looking for intelligent guidelines that will help them to reach a new level of size and strength, or anyone who would like to know more "behind the scenes" information about the Hardgainer years.
Well done, Chuck and Stuart!
