About the Author
David G. Brown holds a U.S. Coast Guard Master's License, 100 Gross Tons, with Commercial Assistance Towing and Auxiliary Sail endorsements. He has served as the captain of a high-speed ferry serving the Lake Erie islands from Port Clinton, Ohio. Brown is an instructor for North Coast Marine Services, a firm specializing in safety risk assessment, crew training and license instruction. He has also been employed as a boatbuilder and repairer, and for 17 years was a television news producer, writing and producing more than 1,500 hours of news/documentary scripts and receiving an Emmy award for his coverage of the Agent Orange story in 1979.

Great book on a time-saving process.

This book fully explains the Baltek method of boat building. The method is a real time saver over standard cold-molded planking methods and it results in a stronger hull. The method allows for construction of all hull shapes using ordinary tools. Check this out if you are considering new methods for boatbuilding.`

Be sure!

I made the mistake of purchasing this book because I was curious about Baltek products and how to use them. I think you can get that kind of information for free elsewhere (on the web or from Baltek).
HOWEVER, if you will be building a boat out of that materal, and you are sure of it, it appeared to be a very thorough explanation of the subject, and is likely a reference such a builder would really need to make the most of this material.

Book condition was very good.
The content had some useful details but was not the a step-by-step manual suggested by the title. Without having read from other sources I could not build a craft from this book. Even so, I'm glad of my purchase.

Again, above the rest.

The second novel in the Arkady Renko series is the one I actually read first. Renko has escaped his enemies by going to work in a factory ship, the 'Polar Star.' Here, he will have to use his talents to solve the murder of a young Georgian (Soviet Georgian, that is) woman who had been in contact with Americans. As in "Gorky Park," the Americans are not portrayed too kindly, which only adds realism to the story. The most extraordinary thing about this book is the absolute control that Smith has of its setting. Once again the author has proven that he can not only tell an interesting tale, but that he can do it with enviable talent: the ice, the cold weather, the trapped ship, the people who lie to Renko for their own reasons, the plots within plots, all of this is masterly interwoven by Smith with apparent ease. Although "Polar Star" does not advance the story of Arkady and Irina (for those with a touch of the romantic in us), it does provide the credible setting for the investigator's return home, opening the way for the third book. The Renko novels are all good, even if the fourth one goes against my romantic streak, and Smith only proves that he is one of the best American writers today, period.

One of the best mystery writers out there today...

Polar Star by Martin Cruz Smith is the second in his Arkady Renko series, and the sequel to his bestselling book, Gorky Park. Things ended badly for Moscow investigator Renko in Gorky Park. He's been fired from his job and removed from the party. Polar Star opens with Renko relegated to as close to a modern day Siberian work camp as you can get-a fishing factory ship called the Polar Star in the Bering Sea. Renko has spent a good part of a year stuck on the "slime line," where he guts and cleans fish.

Events change quickly for Renko when a young, flirtatious cafeteria worker is scooped up in a fishing net, murdered. Renko is called on by the ship's captain to help assist as Renko is the only person on board with a background in investigation. At first, the officer running the investigation tries to convince everyone it was an accident. But Renko knows better, and finally convinces enough people that he is allowed to investigate independently.

The Polar Star is working on a joint fishing expedition alongside American ships, and the possible suspects include not just Russians, but also, Americans. But as more crew members turn up dead, Renko's job becomes more perilous and his life is in danger. There aren't too many good places to hide on a fishing boat. The last chapters will have you on the edge of your seat!

I am amazed that Cruz Smith can write about Russian characters in a way that penetrates their psyche in such a convincing manner (especially considering he isn't Russian). Polar Star is also fascinating in that it takes place during the tail end of the Soviet Era, and we get a glimpse of how Russian's struggled to "see things in a new way." Usually, this "new way" was contrary to communist doctrine. Also, not much is known about these joint US-Soviet fishing expeditions. Americans and Russians certainly make for strange bedfellows. The KGB and CIA are always lurking in the background as they each try to spy on the other. Polar Star is also interesting in that it fills in the gaps since Gorky Park. Renko had many unresolved issues at the end of book one.

Only one thing would have improved this almost perfect book-a map of the Bering Sea and the surrounding lands. This is not exactly an area well known to most of us. Otherwise, I think that Cruz Smith is one of our finest mystery writers today, and I already have Red Square waiting in the wings.

An exceptional read

I have just read the first three Arkady Renko novels (Gorky Park, Polar Star, and Red Square) by Martin Cruz Smith, and am currently enjoying his fourth featuring the Moscow investigator (Havana Bay). I found Polar Star to be an extremely enjoyable read. It is uniquely set on a factory ship on the Bering Sea which consequently infuses a claustrophobic atmosphere into every page. In Arkady Renko, Cruz Smith has created an intriguing and realistic hero. Never before has a leading character been so easy to identify with and warm to. And in Polar Star, Cruz Smith has, in my view, exceeded the standard set by the brilliant Gorky Park. It is extremely well written, with an absorbing plot that gathers momentum as it hurtles towards a gripping climax. In summary, unputdownable.

A great overview

This book is a great overview for those who are interested in the complexities of the human personality. I would recommend this book to people who would feel as though they can connect with the subject matter and would like to know more details about the topic. This book is also a great resource for writers who are looking to make their characters a bit more complex and would like to do some research before assigning character traits to their personalities. I enjoyed the author's personal touch to his writing, as this makes it more meaningful and less of a textbook-like piece of writing. I would love to hear more personal stories from people who have been "diagnosed" with each personality disorder.

Discredits itself

I bought this to assist in practicing short story writing. I wanted a baseline general idea of different psychological issues. Anything I discovered I could use with a character, I planned to research further. The book starts with a disclaimer that it's based mostly on personal experience. (The author needs new friends.) How to tell if you're dating someone with borderline personality disorder. Really? Useful for my stories, but I don't see how that would really help a typical person seeking answers. The book seriously discredits itself with all the type-os, grammatical errors, and there are complete words missing from sentences! How can I believe something as important as mental health issues when they can't even proof read their work? I just got the book and sat last night skipping through reading here and there. Not one section I read was without simple errors. That makes me question the accuracy of the entire book. A huge disappointment.

Great intro, bridges the gap between the layman and the novice scholar.

I recently purchased this book, and I'm definitely very happy with it. As mentioned, at ~100 pages it's reasonably short, but I don't find this a problem at all. In fact, it being concise means that Schendl really only gives you what you need to know. Something I really dislike is authors who don't highlight important aspects. The author here outlines every single aspect of historical linguistics so that the reader can then build upon their knowledge and move forward in specific areas if they wish.

The book is to the point and very clear. I'm not sure why it has been said that you need familiarity with linguistics; there isn't a linguistic term or idea in the entire book which isn't defined in the glossary or in the paragraph itself. Perhaps previous reviewers haven't noticed the glossary (which, by the way, is immensely helpful as it allows the author to use linguistic terms, but have them defined for you on-hand)?

The bibliography is great in that it's also a brief literature review; all pieces of literature are ranked according to how approachable they are (on a scale of 1-3).

The only criticism I have about the book is its take on diachronic vs synchronic linguistics. Schendl talks a few times about how the two approaches need to be combined, but there's very little evidence of synchronic linguistics being used. That being said, the book is obviously about diachronic linguistics, and there is another book in the series by Spolsky on socio-linguistics, which covers this area.

Plenty of examples from a reasonably wide-range of languages are used, although some may argue that the book focuses perhaps too much on European languages. If you're looking for specific diachronic information on a specific language, this is obviously the wrong place to look. Rather, consult this book if you need an overview of the topic.

I can definitely recommend this book as a starting point - it is a great allround introduction to the topic of diachronic linguistics, definitely give it a go if you're starting out!

What's within is unobjectionable, but too short for the price

Herbert Schendl's HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS, part of the Oxford Introductions to Language Study series, is a concise summary of the main themes of the diachronic study of language. Departing little from other textbooks of historical linguistics, it presents the comparative method, details the process of lexical, morphology and syntactical, and phonological change. Contact phenomena are discussed in one brief chapter, and the book ends with various explanations for why languages change.

Schendl's book is not written for the layman, for his discussion of the topic expects some prior knowledge of general linguistics. However, unlike many introductions to historical linguistics which use the whole Indo-European family as the chief example, Schendl seems to realize not all students of general linguistics are proficient in the ancient languages, and so he uses a large amount of English data which anyone who has read Shakespeare and Chaucer can appreciate. However, with this particular angle I don't think that Schendl's book fulfills any real niche. If one already knows something about linguistics, one could just pick up Hock's magisterial PRINCIPLES OF HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS (The Hague: Mouton de Gruyter, 1991), which costs just a few bucks more and is eight times the size. This tiny guide, barely over a hundred pages, doesn't seem much of a good value in comparison.

An earlier edition of this reference book was the text used by my pre-licensing instructor. Now that I'm licensed, I still keep an updated version on my reference bookshelf. It is simply a must have resource for any agent who dares to practice real estate in today's ever-more complex regulatory environment. I buy an updated copy at least every three year. In a profession which even the National Association of REALTORS® says is hobbled by incompetence and unethical behavior, "Modern Real Estate Practice" is a guiding light.

This book was the most difficulty, unfriendly read for me. It's full of tables and scientific stuff that I couldn't read or refer to easily. I ended up giving it away which is a shame, but what's the point of collecting so much information if it's so unappealing to read and ultimately unreadable? They really need to work on improving this, then again, it's an almanac - perhaps the expectations for a pleasurable read should be dim.

This book contains a wealth of nutritional information directed
to the health-conscious consumer. There are specific protocols
pertinent to the back, headaches, depression and a multiplicity
of disease processes and conditions. For instance, back pain
may be managed with Vitamin C, bioflavinoids, Calcium and
Magnesium (Mg. ) Depression may be managed with Dl-Phenlalamine, B-complex, Vitamin C, Iron (Fe) , SAM (e), Folic Acid,
B1, B6 and Vitamin B 12. Licorice, ginger and cayenne may be utilized for depressive states. The aromas "Melissa",
" Creeping Hysop" & "Frankincense" may be utilized for optimal
effect. Deep-tissue massage and chiropractic are also helpful
for depression. Diabetes may be managed with GTF chromium,
Co Q10 enzymes, Vitamins C and E, B6 and B12. Camelia sinensis
tea is known to reduce blood sugar. Infections are helped by
Vitamin A. Biofeedback has been known to help the bladder.
Garlic, Vitamin C, Calcium and Magnesium also help with bladder
issues. The work has a wealth of information directed to the
health-conscious consumer. This information would be hard to
replicate if you tried to do it on your own. It would take
months of plowing through the Journal of the Lancet to duplicate
the protocols set forth in this volume. It is well worth the
price charged.
