Commander in Chief: FDR's Battle with Churchill, 1943 (FDR at War), by Nigel Hamilton

In the next installment of the "splendid memoir Roosevelt didn't get to write" (New York Times),  Nigel Hamilton tells the astonishing story of FDR's year-long, defining battle with Churchill, as the war raged in Africa and Italy.

Nigel Hamilton's Mantle of Command, long-listed for the National Book Award, drew on years of archival research and interviews to portray FDR in a tight close up, as he determined Allied strategy in the crucial initial phases of World War II. Commander in Chief reveals the astonishing sequel — suppressed by Winston Churchill in his memoirs — of Roosevelt's battles with Churchill to maintain that strategy.  Roosevelt knew that the Allies should take Sicily but avoid a wider battle in southern Europe, building experience but saving strength to invade France in early 1944. Churchill seemed to agree at Casablanca — only to undermine his own generals and the Allied command, testing Roosevelt’s patience to the limit. Churchill was afraid of the invasion planned for Normandy, and pushed instead for disastrous fighting in Italy, thereby almost losing the war for the Allies. In a dramatic showdown, FDR finally set the ultimate course for victory by making the ultimate threat. Commander in Chief shows FDR in top form at a crucial time in the modern history of the West.

Review
"Ably dramatizes Roosevelt's wranglings with Churchill during World War II ... Provocative ... It is stimulating to follow Hamilton as he lays out his argument."—Thomas E. Ricks, New York Times Book Review

"Superb." — Fareed Zakaria

"A detailed look at Franklin Roosevelt's role in the Allied strategy midway through World War II, with an emphasis on his relations with Winston Churchill. Hamilton (The Mantle of Command: FDR at War, 1941-1942, 2015, etc.) shows Roosevelt's clear vision of how to win the war and how to create a postwar society that would prevent such wars from recurring. Defeating and disarming Germany and Japan was just the first step; creating an international structure to prevent them from rearming was the only way to ensure a peaceful future. To achieve this, Roosevelt had to convince his own allies—even his own generals—that his approach would achieve the desired outcome. Stalin understandably wanted a second front to force Hitler to commit troops elsewhere. Churchill thought the way to attack Germany was through Italy or the Balkans, the "soft underbelly." The U.S. Chiefs of Staff wanted to launch an invasion through France before their troops were battle-hardened or to put America's main effort into defeating Japan. Hamilton is particularly hard (perhaps too hard) on Churchill, who had the advantage of writing a postwar history that justified his actions. Except for the U.S. interception of Japanese Adm. Yamamoto's plane, there is almost nothing on the action in the Pacific theater. But Hamilton nicely documents his account with contemporary sources ranging from Roosevelt's cousin (and confidante) Daisy Suckley and Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King to Joseph Goebbels, as well as official documents from the major players. The author offers plenty of colorful period detail, including the kinds of cocktails Roosevelt served Churchill and his family and the furnishings of the lavish private home Roosevelt occupied in Casablanca while attending the Allied summit during the North African campaign. As a result, the book presents a convincing portrait of its main subject, strengthening readers' confidence in the author's conclusions. The book is strongly pro-Roosevelt, but Hamilton gives a solid inside view of the strategic thinking that went into the campaign against Hitler as America laid the groundwork for the D-Day invasion the following year."—Kirkus Reviews (starred)

From the Inside Flap
From Nigel Hamilton s acclaimed World War II saga, the astonishing story of FDR s yearlong, defining battle with Churchill in 1943, as the war raged in Africa and Italy
Nigel Hamilton s The Mantle of Command drew on years of archival research and interviews to portray FDR in a tight close-up as he determined Allied strategy in the crucial initial phases of World War II. Commander in Chief reveals the astonishing sequel suppressed by Winston Churchill in his memoirs of Roosevelt s battles with Churchill to maintain that strategy.

Roosevelt knew that the Allies should take Sicily but avoid a wider battle in southern Europe, building experience but saving strength to invade France in early 1944. At the Casablanca Conference, Churchill seemed to agree only to undermine his own generals and the Allied command, testing Roosevelt s patience to the limit. Afraid of the invasion planned for Normandy, Churchill pushed instead for disastrous fighting in Italy, thereby almost losing the war for the Allies. In a dramatic showdown, FDR finally set the ultimate course for victory by making the ultimate threat.

In Commander in Chief, Hamilton masterfully chronicles the clash of nations and of two titanic personalities at a crucial moment in the modern history of the West.

Long-listed for the National Book Award

A Boston Globe Best Book of the Year

Roosevelt s deft but opaque role as commander in chief has been overshadowed or overlooked in many military histories. In his fast-paced, smartly observed recounting of Roosevelt s first year as war leader, Hamilton means to set the record straight . . . Hamilton writes with brio and narrative drive . . . The Mantle of Command is splendid: It s the memoir Roosevelt didn t get to write. Evan Thomas, New York Times Book Review

This is revisionist history in the best sense of the word it forces us to rethink assumptions and to reconsider the way that history unfolded and the role that leading individuals played. This bold argument is extensively researched, well stated, and will undoubtedly change the way we see FranklinRoosevelt. Christian Science Monitor

Masterly . . . A fine beginning to an important project. Wall Street Journal

Easily one of the finest series of books ever written on FDR
By Robert Moore
I took a little longer than I usually do to write a review for a Vine Program item because I felt I needed to read the first book in what will be, when completed, a multiple volume history of FDR as a military leader in WW II. I have to confess that I was sceptical that I would learn much from this book. FDR is, after all, one of my passions in studying presidential history. I've read the standard biographies by Geoffrey Ward (including the wonder volume of letters that FDR wrote to his cousin and perhaps closest friend Daisy Suckley), Jean Edward Smith marvelous one-volume biography, James MacGregor Burns's marvelous two-volume one, the first three volumes of Kenneth Davis's five-volume one (something I intend to get back to), Doris Kearns Goodwin's elegantly written account of the White House in the war years, and Arthur Schlesinger's huge three-volume history of the New Deal as well as William Leuchtenburg's one-volume study of the same subject. I have read the memoirs/biographies by Frances Perkins, Grace Tully, Joseph Lash, and Robert Sherwood (the latter a gargantuan joint bio of FDR and Hopkins during WW II). I've read books by two different Brinkley's, Alan's brief and lackluster book for Oxford University Press and Douglas's huge book on FDR's influence on our park system. And there have been bios or memoirs by or on people like Eleanor, Louis Howe, Arthur Schlesinger, John Kenneth Galbraith, and others, all associated with FDR's administrations, and a variety of books from the dull (Jonathan Alter's THE DEFINING MOMENT) to the fascinating (Hugh Gregory Gallagher's fascinating FDR'S SPLENDID DECEPTION, about how FDR and his team managed the public perception of him after the loss of the use of his legs due to polio - which was enhanced by a visit a year ago to Warm Springs, where a member of the staff generously escorted me and my friend around the grounds and buildings of the rehabilitation center, and later that day to the Little White House, where visitors can stand only a couple of feet from the chair in which he was sitting when he suffered a brain aneurysm and the bedroom only a few feet away where he died shortly afterwards - if you have any interest in FDR, visiting Warm Springs is a MUST). Plus FDR had popped up in book after book that I had read on any of a number of subjects, from histories of WW II to historical surveys such as Kennedy's great book in the Oxford History of the United States series, FREEDOM FROM FEAR, covering 1918-1945.

In other words, I really didn't think Hamilton was going to teach me anything. Man, was I wrong! I knew the overall story and while he has as his central goal revealing precisely how gifted FDR was as a military leader, I had gleaned that many in fact did regard him very highly. In fact, both Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin, neither known for their humility, each said that FDR was the person most responsible for the allies winning WW II. Of course, that isn't quite an endorsement of him as a military leader, but it is cutting rather a fine line in saying that it doesn't to a large degree acknowledge his skills as a military leader. But Hamilton did make me aware, to a degree that I had never grasped before, the extent to which FDR "managed" his generals and admirals, fragmenting each one's authority and area of command, withholding information to each of the plans of another, so that no one could truly challenge his preeminence in handling the War. In episode after episode - and the book really is arranged in what one could call episodes or segments, in which one very precise portion of the overall narrative was dealt with in detail - Hamilton is able to show FDR's extraordinary skill in managing those under his command, without them in most cases even being aware that he was doing it. Other writers on FDR have revealed to a greater degree other aspects of FDR, such as his compassion for everyday people or his passion for a truly democratic and egalitarian society (despite being a card-carrying member of the upper crust), and others have detailed some of his faults in more detail. But Hamilton revealed something that I had never grasped before and that is FDR's genius at listening to people. Some biographers have considered it a flaw in FDR that someone would talk to him and explain passionately their position, FDR smiling and nodding his head the whole while so that they thought he was committing himself to their point of view. But Hamilton helped me understand that in reality what he was doing at such time was not misleading them, but instead listening intently.

The first volume in this set is THE MANTLE OF COMMAND and does a splendid job of covering the first year of the war. This is a review of the second volume, but let me just say that Hamilton could have begun that book earlier than he did. To me, some of FDR's greatest moments came when he, seemingly alone in the US government, understood the gravity of what was happening in Europe in 1939 and 1940, namely, that the destiny of the human race was at stake, but was limited both by the constitution and by the opinion both of others in government and of the American people as to what he could do. Yet, he was able to do an amazing number of things to help Great Britain. For example, while the British were able to avert a war-ending disaster at Dunkirk, they nonetheless had to leave behind nearly all of their munitions. Had Hitler chosen to invade right at that moment, the British simply had no bullets. But in a matter of a few weeks FDR had managed to provide the British with millions of rounds of surplus WW I ammo. It wasn't the finest ammunition in the world, but the miracle was that the British got it at all. It is extraordinary how many ships, vehicles, bullets, rifles, machine guns, and airplanes FDR was able to procure for Great Britain when many in Congress, including most in the Republican party following the lead of Sen. Robert Taft, one of the nation's leading isolationists (not that there weren't many in the Democratic party of a similar frame of mind). FDR was able to do an unbelievable amount of things when on paper he should have been able to do virtually nothing.

The second volume takes us into the second year of the US's involvement in the war and focuses on FDR managing the differing goals and expectations of Churchill, Stalin, and his own staff. In virtually every incident, Hamilton is able to shed new light on FDR's strategy as a leader and his goals as commander in chief. My other great presidential passion is Lincoln, and in comparing the two, FDR emerges as perhaps the most gifted of the two as a purely military leader. Of course, FDR had an advantage in having served as assistant head of the Navy in WW I (the head of the Navy was actually a figurehead, and it was FDR who did most of the work of running the ships of state (pun intended). Lincoln was a very fast learner, but he lacked confidence in the early years of the Civil War in fighting with his generals. Lincoln came to understand that he had ceded them too much control, while FDR from the outset of the war kept the reins firmly in his own hands.

The first two volumes in this series are essential reading for anyone wanting to understand either FDR's role in WW II or, in fact, WW II in itself. Much is made in books on WW II or on the Nazis or on Hitler about Hitler's ineptitude in conducting the war. FDR exercised a similar degree of control on the Allied side, but luckily for us, FDR turned out to be something of a genius at least not just our nation, but all nations, in fighting the Axis powers. This completely supersedes other books on FDR's role in WW II such as Thomas Fleming's THE NEW DEALER'S WAR. I would, in fact, place this on a small list of the most crucial books for understanding the presidency of FDR.

The Western Allies in 1943, Churchill Taps Out
By M Tucker
This is the second volume of Nigel Hamilton’s series on “FDR at War” and it is a gem. In this series of volumes the author has embarked on a mission to present Franklin Roosevelt as Commander-in-Chief and to tell the story of how he directed when and where the war would be fought. This is an important story because Roosevelt’s direction of the Western Allies has not really been told before.

This sequel to “Mantel of Command” covers the conferences of 1943 that decided what would happen after Nazi forces were defeated in North Africa. Hamilton has written a very lively and entertaining story that demonstrates that FDR was the senior partner of the Western Allies. The author exquisitely shows that Roosevelt had the clearest vision of how the war should progress, that he understood that this war must end with unconditional surrender, and that, of the Big Three leaders, only Roosevelt understood that an international organization would be necessary to ensure the peace in the post war world. What I really appreciated was Hamilton’s efforts to inform and remind the reader that the war could not have been won without full US participation and the war with Hitler would most probably have been lost if Churchill had been allowed to direct it.

It should be noted that even though this book is titled “Commander in Chief: FDR's Battle with Churchill, 1943” it does not cover all of 1943. The narrative begins with the opening of 1943 and ends in September of that year; just after the QUADRANT Conference in Quebec. FDR’s battle with Churchill was all about the cross-channel invasion. Winston did not want to do it under any circumstances other than a collapse of the Nazi war effort. It took three separate conferences to settle the matter. Roosevelt and his Joint Chiefs thought the matter settled after each conference only to later have Churchill insist that he had not committed to a cross-channel invasion. This duplicity on the part of Churchill did the most damage to the Anglo-American partnership and only Roosevelt’s patients, determination, scolding and threats kept the partnership together. Thanks to FDR’s efforts he finally did force Churchill to accept that the invasion of Northern France would take place in the spring of 1944.

I do find fault in the author’s assertion that Roosevelt blackmailed Churchill into accepting a firm commitment to the invasion. Hamilton says, “If Churchill would not adhere to the American Overlord strategy, as per the Trident agreement reached in May [1943], the President thus quietly indicated to the Prime Minister that the United States would have to withhold an agreement to share development of the atomic weapon.” (p. 313) No citation is given for this assertion so I assume no such ultimatum can be verified. I am willing to believe the author’s conclusion but it would have been wonderful for him to elaborate on what evidence persuades him.

All-in-all this is a very good, very entertaining and very fast read and I am hoping the author does continue his story with a final third volume.

Commander in Chief is the second volume in the proposed trilogy of books on FDR in World War II by Dr. Nigel Hamilton
By C. M Mills
Commander in Chief is the second volume in Dr. Nigel Hamilton's proposed trilogy on President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945) and his inspired creative genius in leading the Allies to victory over the Axis Powers in World War II.
In this volume the author focuses on the pivotal year of 1943. In this volume the growing rift between FDR and Winston Churchill the great wartime Prime Minister of Great Britain over Allied strategy is the main focus. It was a year notable for:
a. The Casablanca Conference at which the policy of Unconditional Warfare against the Axis powers of Germany, Italy and Japan and their allies is strongly enunciated by FDR.
b.The Trident Conference in Washington DC during the spring of 1943 saw Churchill argue for attacking the Nazis through Italy and the Balkans rather than engage in the cross channel invasion favored by FDR, General Marshall and American top brass. FDR won the argument insisting on the initiation of Overlord that led to the Normandy landings in June 1944.
c. Stalin and the Soviets favored the Normandy landings forcing German troops into a pincer with the Western Allies advancing through France into the Reich and the Soviets moving through Eastern Europe and into Germany.
d. FDR also had to manage the Pacific strategy against Japan. It was notable that Admiral Yamamoto the architect of the Pearl Harbor attack was shot down and killed in this year.
e. FDR favored the establishement of a United Nations following the end of the war and was against the colonialism espoused by Churchill the old Victorian. FDR was much more democratic and forward looking in his views than was Churchill.
f. The strategy of American troops participating in the invasion of North Africa, Sicily, Sardinia and up the Italian boot before launching the French invasion was a wise policy.
g. FDR picked General Dwight. D. Eisenhower to lead the Overlord landings. An inspired choice of commander!
Nigel Hamilton makes clear the differences in strategy between the Americans and the British. One concludes this excellent book on strategy and combat thankful that a genius like FDR was in charge of the war against the Axis Powers. An excellent volume!

Modern PHP Ecosystem and Best Practices
By AmirBehzad Eslami
I've developed PHP applications since version 4.0, back in the days when all methods were public. Now, most of those codes are considered legacy. Before reading this book, there were many gaps in my understanding of PHP 5, not only in its new features, but also in the new best practices. This book alone helped me to upgrade myself to PHP 5.6 confidently.

The author knows how to present stuff clearly. By giving real world examples, he wants to make sure you really get it. The book is easy to read and very well written. However, it is assumed the reader already knows how to code in PHP; it is not a book for beginners, or to learn PHP's basics.

Unlike online tutorials, the examples in this book are modern, for example, the author uses a component from Symfony framework to demonstrate the Namespace usage. Not only the author explains each new feature with clear examples, but he also covers best practices for each feature.

The author is well-known because of his work at www.phptherightway.com, you can get an idea on his opinions on this website. To conclude, I highly recommend this book.

Really Great Content
By Kelly Kiernan
This book does a great job of explaining traits, interfaces and a number of other language features I was fuzzy on. It even goes through configuring a server with nginx, deploying your project and more admin stuff I needed to improve on. I was really excited to see that stuff covered so well. It's also cool to learn a bit about HHVM and Hack. Great book, highly recommended.

A Must Read for PHP Developers
By Troy Wolf
Excellent ROI. I have been a web dev for almost 20 years and was a "hard-core" PHP guy for some of those years, then didn't touch PHP for over 8 years. PHP grew up while I was off in Python land! In my opinion, Josh Lockhart's Modern PHP is a must-read for any PHP programmer. Sure there are lots of things he could go into deeper, but this book was needed--an excellent overview of almost everything a PHP developer needs to know from installing and configuring PHP and web servers, code style, recommended directory structures, the newer supported object oriented concepts, testing, debugging, profiling, deployments, using Composer, and even a good overview of HHVM and Hack--enough to help you know if you want to dive in more at this time.

I will surely be referring to this book to lean on some of Josh's recommendations as I setup new projects.

A little additional Josh Lockhart plug--I learned about him when I chose to use his Slim PHP micro framework in my latest project. That project was rolled into production about 90 days ago to very happy customers. I am delighted with Slim. It does the very basic plumbing I'd rather not code and does it very well. Then it stays the heck out of my way so I can write my own PHP to do what I need to do.

Follow the math!
By not a natural
This is a very accessible and informative book. I had a couple of courses in calculus back in the early '60's, but I remembered next to nothing. Furthermore, I had absolutely no recollection of partial derivatives or total differentials. For all I know, we never covered them.

Nevertheless, with the help of Dowling's text, a colleague and I were able to use partial derivatives with a large data set to demonstrate that school size and the measured achievement of schools with largely low-income students are inversely related. Furthermore, using total differentials we were able to demonstrate that the measured achievement costs of increasing school size are diminished as districts get smaller, and that the benefits of small schools for less-advantaged students are diminished as districts get larger.

This is the one time in my life that I was able simply "follow the math" to a new and interesting finding, the one that followed from the total differential. Without a text as accessible, usefully organized, and broadly informative as Dowling's, I never would have been able to pull it off. A small achievement, perhaps, but very satisfying.

A solid introduction
By Armando Piedra
...to the topic, although a bit more depth would be the only thing lacking it. I recommend it to anyone who is studying business and is struggling with the math side of it, although as you progress in your studies, you will notice that the book doesnt go into enough depth, especially in the area of differential geometry.

I am scheduled to start a Masters in Applied Economics. I was not getting straight answers, I decided to contact one of the finest schools in the world, John Hopkins. On their website they recommend the outline in this book. That is what they expect students to know before they start a Masters in Econ.

David Bailey: Bailey ExposedFrom National Portrait Gallery

Born into a working-class family in London’s East End in 1938, David Bailey became the best-known photographer of his generation and has led a life that most people can only dream of. Drawing on numerous interviews, some previously unpublished, and illustrated with many iconic photographs as well as previously unpublished images from Bailey’s private archive, this book explores the man behind the camera. His outspoken and irreverent observations on life, death, women, style, fashion, sex, class, the movies, the 1960s, photography and Hitler are as thought-provoking as they are revealing. The book also contains the reflections of some of the illustrious figures Bailey has worked with, among them Angelica Huston, Paul Smith, Jerry Hall, Catherine Deneuve, Mary Quant, Kenneth Williams, Jean Shrimpton, Penelope Tree, Damien Hirst and Diana Vreeland, as well as fellow photographers Cecil Beaton, Terence Donovan and Brian Duffy. In their interviews and writings over the years, these figures have provided some fascinating insights into the experience of being the focus of Bailey’s lens.

Bailey - What a delightful character - Such a talented photographer
By J. M. Nye
A cheeky book that perfectly presents Bailey's unique style of photography while revealing something of his character. His distillation of essentials captured in an instant produce pure magic regardless of who he is working with. Every image a delightful surprise. I was at art school when Blow-Up first screened and we all rushed out to see it. In retrospect the movie was pretty anaemic compared to Bailey, his lifestyle and his work. The book is a real gem portraying so many really great characters of the period. It also provides an extremely interesting visual record of David's progression through life.

These poems will speak light and truth and beauty into your dark places. They will tell you that you are not alone in this, that other people have gone through the same things and made it safely to the other side. Perfect for reading on days when you feel not-enough or too-much, when you feel overwhelmed and exhausted, when you feel like you want to give up because you don't see an end to the darkness. It's an easy, soul-brightening read that I would recommend to anyone and everyone.

An incredibly talented author - Elizabeth McNamara
By Bob
An incredibly talented author, Elizabeth's "Drumbeat for the Mending" provides an up-close, personal, look at life -- from her perspective, as well as for each of us. Her keen insights are directly applicable for everyone -- whether man or woman, teenager, young adult, sibling, parent, grandparent, or someone who seeks to better understand oneself, as well as others. We truly feel her pain, joy and hopeful aspirations, in every page. My wife and I are blessed to mentor incarcerated young girls, ages 13-18, who are seeking to find a way/someone who can feel their pain, who has walked many of the same paths with them, and importantly -- walked through the valleys into the sunlight with a new beginning in their lives .... "Drumbeat for the Mending" is such a "light for their path" that, I am certain, will powerfully and positively impact lives for many years to come! Looking forward to Elizabeth's next publication!

Kon-Tiki: Across the Pacific in a Raft, by Thor Heyerdahl

Now a major motion picture, Kon-Tiki is the record of Thor Heyerdahl’s astonishing three-month voyage across the Pacific.

Kon-Tiki is the record of an astonishing adventure—a journey of 4,300 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean by raft. Intrigued by Polynesian folklore, biologist Thor Heyerdahl suspected that the South Sea Islands had been settled by an ancient race from thousands of miles to the east, led by a mythical hero, Kon-Tiki. He decided to prove his theory by duplicating the legendary voyage.

On April 28, 1947, Heyerdahl and five other adventurers sailed from Peru on a balsa log raft. After three months on the open sea, encountering raging storms, whales, and sharks, they sighted land—the Polynesian island of Puka Puka.

Translated into sixty-five languages, Kon-Tiki is a classic, inspiring tale of daring and courage—a magnificent saga of men against the sea.

This edition includes a foreword by the author and a unique visual essay of the voyage.

Sharks, ship wrecks, storms, tropical islands...
By windriver12
With each passing year, less and less of the world remains to be discovered. With GPS and satellite imagery, our oceans have been charted and the jungles surveyed. Our world is no longer a mystery. No longer do we have maps fringed by threatening pictures of dragons and sea monsters warning sailors and explorers of the unknown that lies out there. But when I picked up this book I was taken back fifty years in time. Back to a time when men ate meat raw and walked around with clubs hunting big game. OK, perhaps I am getting carried away.
Thor Heyerdahl believed the Polynesian islands were inhabited by sea faring travellers from Peru. But his thesis on this topic was ridiculed because no one would believe that the pacific ocean could be crossed by a flimsy raft made of balsa wood and bamboo. So Heyerdahl decides to prove IT IS possible by building a raft using exactly the same materials the ancient Peruvians used and sailing off the coast of Peru hoping to eventually reach Polynesia.
Nearly every step off his journey was filled with nay sayers who said he was crazy and "experts" who variably told him he was going to die, the raft was going to break apart, or the balsa wood would absorb the sea water and sink. He ignored them all. When they told him balsa trees of the size he needed no longer existed along the coast, he took a jeep deep into the jungles through flooded roads and GOT his trees. Which then they floated down to the ocean in a river.
Heyerdahl is keenly aware of his surroundings and describes his voyage vividly and in simple prose. I could smell the sea breeze and feel the spray of the ocean. It was like taking a mini vacation every time I sat down with this book. You'll swim with whale sharks and get caught in ferocious storms. The six men caught sharks with their hands and even had a pet parrot. I suppose all self respecting seamen need to have a parrot.
The ending to this book was surprising but perfect. It brings the story full circle and could not have ended any other way. So prepare yourself a margarita, kick back, and begin a sea adventure.

Courage, comrades, an idea, and the ocean
By neurotome
Kon-Tiki starts with an idea, conceived during Heyerdahl's stay on a South Seas island researching his doctoral thesis: could Polynesia have been colonized by trans-Pacific emigres from the pre-Colombian cultures of South America?
A true scientist, Heyerdahl isn't satisfied with deciding "yes" - he must test the theory! In the hands of a lesser man this would have produced a musty old thesis collecting dust on the back shelf of an anthropology library. Instead, Heyerdahl marshals five friends of heroic spirit, acquires 9 giant balsa wood logs and some other supplies, and within a few months he sets sail from Peru to cross the Pacific. Drinking fresh water stored in hollowed-out bamboo shafts and eating fish that leap aboard the raft, they make their way across the ocean, well knowing that despite the advanced radio technology of 1936, their chance of rescue in the event of mishap is nil.
The only sea book I can think of to rival this for sheer interest and adventure is Verne's "20,000 Leagues under the Sea," - a fantasy. Heyerdahl's work is true, and his heroic heart shines through in every word. His love and reverence for the ocean and the primitive culture he sought to imitate, combined with his scientific clarity of exposition, make it a joy to read and will instill the sea-lust into even the most devoted landlubber.
I think everyone ought to read this book, for sheer pleasure, and as an example of what can be done with stout heart, clear head, and good will. I recommend it to you without any reservation.

Borders on a spiritual experience.
By A Customer
I have just finished reading this book straight through. In and of itself this statement alone is high praise for any book since I have only done that a few times prior. The story grabbed me hopelessly, only to release me upon it's unwelcome finale. Even then my psyche was thoroghly unwilling to release the warm embrace of Kon Tiki's quest into the primitive and yet tranquil oneness with our world's awesome power and beauty. "Whether it was 1947 B.C. or A.D. suddenly became of no significance. We lived, and that we felt with alert intensity. We realized that life had been full for men before the technical age also--in fact, fuller and richer in many ways than the life of modern man. Time and evolution somehow ceased to exist; all that was real and that mattered were the same today as they had always been and would always be. We were swallowed up in the absolute common measure of history--endless unbroken darkness under a swarm of stars." This page was earmarked by the book's previous reader, and I immediately shared his or her affection for the page; specifically, this quote. It, more than any other, summed up the emotions stirred in me by the author's gracious sharing over the years and miles of an adventure that I at once became a part of in my heart and soul. I am a brutish, biker-type dude. Generally speaking, tears are unacceptable in my "Big Twin" thundering realm of machismo. However, upon reaching the stories conclusion I was hard pressed to hold back...STRIKE THAT...I was unable to fight back (hard as I tried) salty tears unexplainable. Feeling an uncontrollable urge to let my girlfriend in on the moment, I struggled desperately to choke out for her the final few paragraphs. I now sense an overpowering need to alter my lifestyle; and will at the very least be haunted by this desire for a very long time! Thank you so much Mr. Heyerdahl, et.al.

Nice!
By zoe
Build Your Running Body seems like one of the more thorough running books out there. Here's a quick breakdown of the chapters...

-Chapter 1 covers basic running stuff such as motivation, gear, etc.

-Chapter 2 is what I think of as the meat and potatoes of the book. It tells you how to build the parts of your body to get you a better "running body". A few areas discussed include the muscles, connective tissues, hormones, nervous system - I like the some of these are things runners don't normally think about.

-Chapter 3 talks helps you with a running program, talking about things such as a training schedule, recovery, injury prevention (BTW, runners with problematic hamstrings might want to check out Bulletproof Your Hamstrings

-Chapter 4 discusses running and your diet

-Chapter 5 talks about a racing strategy/approach

As you can see, its a pretty complete book that cover a lot of important (and little thought about) running information. There's also over a hundred workouts to help build your running body - from plyometrics to cross training - and there's even recipes! So if you're looking for ways to improve your running and your body, its worth a good look! :)

AWESOME illustrations, Love strength building and injury prevention exercises as well as the nutrition advice; highly recommend
By ALEJAS
Wow! I never thought that a book about running would call my attention, but this one did… I was totally surprised to learn that strength building exercises can help me to improve my running, as can eating certain types of foods. Who would have thought of finding recipes in a running book? Not me! To be honest, I did not pick up the book because I wanted to run. I was delighted that it had illustrations of strength building and injury prevention exercises.

A couple of years ago I sprained my ankle while playing soccer and was sent home with a cast and a sheet of paper with instructions of exercises that I could not figure out. With this book I can easily turn to the chart on page 378 to find a brief description of the injury that I suffered, as well as a list of exercises that can help me prevent/recover from this injury and I can then look at the illustrations of these exercises. I’ve also learned what exercises help to relieve my back of the stress of sitting on a chair for sustained periods of time (something I do at work every day). So, I love the illustrations that show how the exercise is done and also the charts that tell me which muscle groups are being worked out. Strength building is something that I had been wanting to do for some time now, but my biggest obstacle was that I tend to focus on one muscle group. Now that I have the book I use the chart as a guideline and it’s been of tremendous help.

Another thing that I like a lot about this book is that it talks about nutrients and food. For me this is interesting because oftentimes I feel weak after my workouts and when this happens I don’t feel like exercising anymore. I know that I am lacking one or more nutrients, but even my doctor has failed to give me good advice on this. So, the nutrition advice and recipes contained in this book come in very handy for me.

Third, I love that there’s a chart with schedules to follow. Plainly stated, I am not a planner. If the plan is given to me, I will carry it out. But if you ask me to plan my routine, be it running or any other kind of exercise, I might find it easier to skip the whole thing altogether. So, I could not be more grateful that the authors of this book have done all the planning for me!

Lastly, I was one of those people who think that running ruins your knees and creates all sorts of foot problems. But after about a week of reading this book, I am ready to reconsider my previous position on running. As a matter of fact, I am excited about it! This coming October I will be participating in my first 5K marathon and I am looking forward to it.

Build Your Running Body has helped me to understand that running is much more than putting on my tennis shoes and moving my legs. It’s a total workout that involves many muscles of the body as well as the mind. On my last visit to Barnes and Noble I browsed through other running books and I can honestly say that this one is the best. The book is worth it and I totally recommend it!

Encyclopedic...
By JAG
First let me say how excited I was when I heard Peter Magill had a book coming, I pre-ordered immediately as I really wanted to "Build my running body" for the upcoming season. Pete's American Record Masters 5K is an amazing accomplishment and his columns in Running Times meld experience, wit, and science into the best columns I have read. His focus on muscle fibers types and their relevancy really form a foundation for training and recovery. Perhaps my high expectations have led to my lackluster reaction to this book. It is like an encyclopedia trying to cover every topic possible from running history to muscle fibers to making meals. It is not focused on just "Building your running body" in the way that I envisioned. It has the feel of a book that is written by committee with multiple authors and editors each wanting to add more but then being constrained by page numbers. While I was waiting for this to come out, I purchased another book for focused strength training for runners that met my needs, but that is it's sole focus. I think the current book could have been broken into three (strength training, nutrition, training-racing).That being said, as noted, my reaction may be due to what I hoped for-a focused book-versus what this delivered-an encyclopedic effort. For others, I think its worth a look, you can always return to amazon if you don't like.
UPDATE Oct 2015 I am revising my star rating to 4 stars, perhaps was unfair initial assessment because it did not meet my personal expectations of what I was looking for. Major strengths are the wealth of information within this volume, major weakness is lack of focus, trying to be all inclusive. My personal benefits have come from the focus of running more frequently at more reasonable paces. While I did not PR in my main target (Half Marathon) I came close and PRd at other shorter distances. Most importantly, I am a happier injury free runner. Can't say all of that came from this book, but some of the principles certainly helped. Still admire Peter Magill and look forward to all of his columns and publications.
