Too "in-depth". Not easy to read but packaged with good TSQL info. Not for the newbie.

I just went yesterday to a famous bookstore here in town to check this one before order it online and left a bit disappointed, with no desire at all to buy it. Don't get me wrong, Itzik is an awesome writer, a genius on his field, but I do not share the previous 5 start opinions and I will explain why.

I do not consider myself an TSQL expert but got some SQL DBA years on my belt and a MCTS cert too. Having said that and after almost finish reading Microsoft SQL Server 2008 T-SQL Fundamentals (PRO-Developer), same author, I found this one very difficult to follow, flooded with tons of theory and math that for a TSQL book is in my opinion too much. Yes, SQL language has strong logic and math background but that is not what DBAs or developers are looking on a technical book and this is not a college book either; people are looking for practical books which can be quickly be applied on daily job activities.

Chapter #2 for example is full of logic and math stuff that I honestly skipped immediately. Nice as bonus information but not "straight to the point" T-SQL stuff. You can easily take that chapter out and keep the book lighter in my honest opinion. Same for Chapter#3, more logic and math stuff, related to T-SQL, yes, but no the real stuff.

Chapter 1, 7 and 10 are taken of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 T-SQL Fundamentals (PRO-Developer), which by the way, is an outstanding book. Those chapters are about SELECT, JOINS and DML, information that like I said, can be found on the Fundamentals book but in an easy to read style, even with exercises so you can evaluate your own skills.

Chapter #4 is probably the more interesting chapter of the whole book, is about query performance. I must accept Itzik dominates the material but introduces so many complex query concepts and statements that you will get lost in no time. He even mentions he wasn't so sure about where to put this chapter, end of beginning, because the way he's using complex DMVs. But I believe you still can explain query performance without being so technical. This chapter is just full of complex query techniques that make even more complex the explanation of performance tuning strategies. I prefer SQL Server 2008 Query Performance Tuning Distilled by Grant Fritchey; a book just dedicated for that topic but delightful and easy to follow, without being a "dummy book".

In order to be fair and make justice though, the book is really full of theory about logical query processing, set theory and algorithms, foundations of what SQL language is. If you have a really strong background of TSQL query (I mean, really strong TSQL skills), math and the enough time to digest and understand that, this book is for you.

But to me, this book can be out of your book shelve and be easily replaced by this combo instead: SQL Server 2008 Query Performance Tuning Distilled+Microsoft SQL Server 2008 T-SQL Fundamentals (same author) Both will teach the same in a better and easy to follow approach, skipping all the logic, math and boring sql language foundation which to me, are unnecessary on this kind of books especially if you are not in college anymore, but working as a full time DBA.

What else can we ask to have in one book about T-SQL Querying?

I have really enjoyed this book from the begining to the end.

The new chapters from Steve and Dejan:

- Set Theory and Predicate Logic
- Algorithms and Complexity
- The Relational Model

are a very good complement. Having these topics is handy and refreshing, not to mention a must in this discipline.

Itzik's cover about the new T-SQL features introduced with SQL Server 2008, is insightful and very well guided. No doubt that he is an educator by nature.

If you are new to T-SQL, I strongly recommend that you first read Itzik's book "Microsoft� SQL Server� 2008 T-SQL Fundamentals", prior to diving into this series (T-SQL Querying and T-SQL Programming).

Expert knowledge and outstanding organization. More lucid writing needed.

Sometimes, the authors of technical books have the prerequisite expert knowledge and have an outstanding organization and game plan. But their writing is just too ambiguous. This is one of those books. The author should simply get to the point and not meander too much.

First, this book is not for the beginners. Indeed, you may not need all the knowledge contained in this book to be even intermediate DBA or DB Developer. But if you want to raise your knowledge of MS SQL to an expert level, a book like this sure helps. It is really too bad the author can't be more forthright in his writing.

Pros:
1)Expert in how MS SQL processes transactions.
2)Outstanding organization.
3)Comprehensive explanation of T-SQL.
4)If you want to understanding SQL performance tuning, this book is a must.

Cons:
1)Not for the beginners.
2)Writing could be far more lucid.

Highly readable, wonderful personal insights

I loved this book for it's personal approach. In parts it feels as if you are being let into the family circle with vivid pictures of nature and family anecdotes. It's an easy read and because it's written as a series of letters to children of different ages, it would be very suitable for young people, although it's not a children's book as such.

I also loved the mix of autobiography and anecdotes about various environmental campaigns and the benefits and pitfalls in using celebrity to change things for the better. It also highlights the value of what we all do as individuals or even as celebrities once the fame has faded. There is much info in the book on attempts to achieve environmental change but it doesn't 'tell' you, it shows you through the life stories of this remarkable man. Highly recommended.

Suzuki would like to leave a compiled set of letters on topics that he believes to be really important to the next generation, and in fact, pulls no punches on telling the reader in the Author's Note that he believes this book to be a "loose stream of ideas." I appreciated that Suzuki was very open about this concept so I knew exactly what I was getting into with this book.

There are many wonderful things about this book. Suzuki is undoubtedly a fascinating individual, and I loved the anecdotes and stories about his life that are sprinkled throughout the pages, and this was truly the strength of the book. The scenes of the Canadian incarceration during WWII were haunting, and the depictions of his life becoming one with the wilderness were mesmerizing. I found myself, however, wanting to stay within those stories, not within the other text, and I could tell I would like to read a memoir by Suzuki.

The problem with this book, and like I mentioned before at the beginning, is that it is essentially a set of lectures and ideas that Suzuki would like to leave his grandchildren. My parents and in particular my own father, is exactly at this stage of his life right now. He is finding it more and more important to leave his legacy and his viewpoints on the world to his children and grandchildren. These parts of the book make it harder for me to read as it is dry and in lecture format, and I receive much of that already in my life from someone I need to listen to more than Suzuki. Thus, while this will be very valuable for Suzuki's grandchildren, there may be a loss of the same importance because of the mode of communication to the greater public.

Overall, it's clear that Suzuki has led a good life, a fascinating life, and it's worth reading about-- I see he has an autobiography (or two), which makes a lot of sense. That said, this book was less about us, the readers, which makes it harder to read, and more about his grandchildren, which makes sense, as that was the purpose.

Stockholm based writer Carl Magnus Palm is recognised as the world’s foremost Abba historian. His earlier books include Abba: The Complete Recording Sessions, which was based on extensive interviews with all four Abba members, From Abba to Mamma Mia!, a collaboration with Anders Hanser, photographer and close friend of Abba. I wanted an in-depth biography that adequately described this marvelous band without omitting the aspects that might be viewed as being uncomplimentary, or controversial. This book has been updated to address every fact, story, interview, or rumor concerning any of the band members right up to 2014. Every possible item from Bjorn & Bennie's folk music days in the Sixties right up to Agnetha's romantic endeavors as described in those less notable magazines at the local corner store. There are so many accounts of the intricate aspects of each member's life with painstaking efforts made to get every related factor adequately covered; that you may find that it is more information than you wanted to know!

I am very pleased with the way the book is written, in that it permits the reader to experience each period as it occurred without unnecessary foreshadowing. It is a long book, packed with information.

A masterpiece, nearly encyclopedic concerning this band, the history of the group, and the creation of that wonderful music. After having read it; I actually find myself to be a greater fan of the band, and each member than prior to reading it, though always I admired that music.

The author wrote the definitive book on this band, and how their epic journey transpired!

My favorite genre is biography, and this has to be one of the most comprehensive bios I've ever read. Times four! Their individual stories go back to each of their family's history, then detailed career histories, their manager's life history...before we even begin to discuss ABBA. Not only is it full of quotes from interviews, it's filled with statistics. I can't imagine the amount of time the author spent on research.
The writing style makes an easy read and it's not salacious or opinionated. It's just the story of the band members, their talents, their vision and their progress to world domination. Their personal lives are laid bare but mainly they tell their own story through quotations. This book is valuable to fans because prior to the internet it was almost impossible (in the U.S.) to get much real information on these artists.

Carl Magnus Palm did a lot of work researching Abba, but he lost the story along the way. Instead of getting to know the band members, he relates who, what, when, where, and sometimes why. The facts were there, but they lacked any emotional coloring.

About the Author
Jefferson Davis (1808-1889) was the president of the Confederacy during the American Civil War, served in the House of Representatives and the Senate, and was secretary of war under Franklin Pierce.
William J. Cooper, Jr., is Boyd Professor of History at Louisiana State University. His most recent book is "Jefferson Davis, American, winner of the 2001 "Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Biography and the Jefferson Davis Award. He lives in Baton Rouge.

Keep Washington weird

My husband and I love to just hope in the car and drive somewhere new so when I saw this book I knew we could have some fun with it. So we try visit as many sites in this book as we can. So far we have been to 8 or 9 and it just gives us a little purpose to driving to find somewhere new. here was also some interesting stories in there that I had not heard before. Definitely check out if you live or are visiting Washington!

About the Author
Frank de Jong is Professor of Financial Markets and Risk Management at Tilburg University. He is also a senior research fellow and program coordinator at Netspar, an independent network for research and education in the field of pensions, aging and retirement.

Barbara Rindi is Associate Professor of Economics at Bocconi University in Milan. She is also a researcher for for the Paolo Baffi Centre for Monetary and Financial Economics.

A good textbook

The book by De Jong and Barbara Rindi holds the following unfair preference with respect to my book "Microstructure and noise...", namely that it is 3 times cheaper. But it is also well-written and professionally edited. That's why I assigned it 3 stars while assigning 2 stars to my own book.

Microstructure is presented in the book as a disjointed compendium of models and methods without any overriding logic or purpose. But the models are presented in a nice and understandable way. It also contains exercises to each chapter. The book is especially recommended for a graduate course in microstructure for finance students. While Larry Harris' textbook is unparalleled, the material there is mostly geared towards MBA-level lecture course. De Jong and Rindi's book, however, can structure PhD-level course with some additional material from another good book on the subject, that is by J. Hasbrouck.

In short, De Jong and Rindi's book must be on the table of every professor teaching this subject on a sufficiently advanced level. It can also provide valuable insights to an expert through comprehensive and accurate rendering of other people's theories. The main weakness of the book is unclear distinction between authors' and other people results.
