About the Author
Dr. Deborah J. Mayhew is owner and principal of Deborah J. Mayhew & Associates, a consulting firm based in Massachusetts, offering courses and consulting on all aspects of Usability Engineering and user interface design. Clients include American Airlines, AT&T, Ford,Harvard Univeristy, and NASA. Dr. Mayhew received her Ph.D. in Experimental Cognitive Psychology from Tufts University. She is the author of Principles and Guidelines in Software User Interface Design (Prentice Hall), a coeditor of Cost-Justifying Usability (Academic Press), and a contributor to Human Factors and Web Development.

The Best of Books Out There

Bought this for my wife as a textbook and started reading it as well. From talking to others in the field this is the "Bible" that guides all the best Usability Engineering practices. I found myself going through it one day when I was bored and managed to actually gain a good understanding of a very advanced subject.

Did not give any specifics, hard-to-follow charts, low-to-no value examples

As a senior usability architect holding a master's in human factors in information design and having 10 years experience in the software industry, I did not find this book helpful at all. I felt that the before-chapter flowcharts did exactly what Edward Tufte tells you not to do when displaying info and charts - don't use a lot of non-data ink - they were nigh impossible to follow (the unnecessary shadowing and overall gray/black page made it even more difficult. i found her examples basically worthless and the book very disorganized, in my opinion. after reading it, I thought, well that was a big waste of my time. I was very disappointed in the book, which had been highly recommended to me by a designer (which is why I bought it). If you're new to the field, this might be helpful, perhaps, but if you've been in the software industry (and especially in the usability industry for any length of time), you should already know much of this.

About the Author

Clancy Martin is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Martin has authored, coauthored, and edited several books in philosophy, including Love and Lies: An Essay on Truthfulness, Deceit, and the Growth and Care of Erotic Love (2015), Honest Work, Third Edition (OUP, 2013), and The Philosophy of Deception (OUP, 2009).

Wayne Vaught is Dean for College of Arts & Sciences, Professor of Philosophy and Medicine, and Director of the Center for Applied and Professional Ethics at University of Missouri-Kansas City. Professor Vaught has published articles on bioethics for The Journal of Clinical Ethics, Theoretical Ethics and Bioethics, and the Hastings Center Report.

The late Robert C. Solomon was Quincy Lee Centennial Professor of Business and Philosophy and Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. He was the author or editor of more than forty books.

Common Orders

This text is useful for 3rd and 4th more medical students who are beginning to write admission H&Ps, as well as admission orders. I also could see this being useful for interns. The book starts with a section called "Guide Tables," which lists, in table format, commonly used information such as DVT prop. initial vent settings, abx spectrum, and more. The tables are made to be read quickly and are ordered well. The main text of the book is divided into specialty areas. For example, cards, endo, infxn disease and so on. Within each section, there are common admission orders. They follow the standard format. The orders also include a section called "management" which details initial treatment, as well as a section called "diagnosis," which provides more information on rule outs and pearls regarding the diagnosis. Overall, I found the orders to be accurate and succinct. Again, this text is for quick reference, so do not expect explanations, as they are not given. There is a bonus section on toxicology which I think is useful and usually left out of reference texts. In addition to the standard sections, there are sections based on "symptoms" (i.e., chest pain, cough); and a section on symptom management. I think the symptom management section is perfect for the intern who is beginning to memorize the commonly used symptomatic drugs. Overall, I think this is a perfect reference for the medical student who is beginning to write orders and even for a new intern. In comparison to "Medicine," another commonly used order book, this Instant Access book is more thorough, the orders are more reasonable (I have found many problems with the orders in the "Medicine" book. I would recommend this book without reservation.

Coffee Table Cars

This is a coffee table book, definitely not for the detailed aficionado but perhaps for someone who enjoys cars and reading their stories and looking at their pictures. It is concerned more with speed and performance than with the newer fuel efficient models. The book is divided into; the first automobile to 1920, then the 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000 onward, how an engine works, a glossary and an index.

The pictures are beautiful and most all in colour. There are smaller illustrations listing the origin, the engine and top speed and a bit of their history. Then there are specific cars singled out for a larger page display, such as the Model T, Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, and the DeLorean DMC-12.
Those who want an illustrated story of the automobile's history might enjoy this book.

Although the overall quality is okay, the Amazon description fails to mention that this book is predominantly about foreign cars. There is only minimal mention of American cars and the innovations that were made by the domestic brands of the U.S.

Impressive!

Wow, what a great gift for the car enthusiast. It is big, colorful and very detailed about the history of the car. It has images and information about cars I never knew existed. I purchased it as a gift for my father who is a classic car buff, and he loved it! Great value for the price and the big full color images make you want to spend time just reading about all of the different makes and models. I would recommend it for anyone who collects, restores or dreams about the automobile.
